Mecklenburg County Public Well being just lately eradicated 11 illness investigator positions that observe HIV, syphilis and different sexually transmitted infections.

Three of these positions had been vacant, two had been transferred to different positions, and 6 had been laid off, Well being Director Raynard Washington advised QCity Metro.

HIV instances in North Carolina are estimated at 11.4 per 100,000 individuals, in line with America’s HIV Epidemic Evaluation Dashboard (AHEAD).

Washington mentioned the positions had been eradicated as a result of the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention had not launched funding for the HIV Prevention Portfolio to the state, which Congress has already appropriated.

“We needed to both decide to proceed working with out federal funds or to cease the work,” Washington mentioned.

Washington mentioned he hopes the positions come again sooner or later. This system’s present funding expired on Could 31.

“These are the oldsters who exit into the neighborhood and be sure that individuals are conscious that they’ve been uncovered to or identified with a sexually transmitted an infection or HIV. And so their job is de facto essential in our work to disrupt transmission,” Washington mentioned.

The Well being Division cuts got here shortly after Mecklenburg commissioners permitted a $2.36 billion price range, together with $13.8 million in reductions to county departments and $6 million in cuts to nonprofits.

The county cuts included $2 million taken from the Group Service Grant Applications, which help providers like housing help, well being providers and meals safety.

Carolina Public Press was first to report the cuts in Mecklenburg County’s illness investigator positions.
