After greater than six a long time, the Tennessee A&I Tigers, the groundbreaking males’s HBCU basketball crew, obtained their long-awaited go to to the White Home.

Essence reviews that after greater than six a long time, the Tennessee A&I Tigers, the groundbreaking males’s HBCU basketball crew, made their long-awaited go to to the White Home on April 14.

Vice President Kamala Harris paid tribute to the crew, acknowledging their pioneering spirit and indelible contributions to the sport of basketball and the broader battle for social justice.

“There’s a lot that we’ve achieved as a nation due to the heroes like people who I’m proper now,” Harris stated. “I, like so many people, stand in your broad shoulders, every one in every of you.”

The celebrated teammates, Dick Barnett (who later grew to become a Corridor of Fame guard with the New York Knicks), George Finley, Ernest Jones, Henry Carlton, Robert Clark, and Ron Hamilton, participated in an intimate gathering held within the Roosevelt Room of the White Home.

In 1957, the Tennessee A&I Tigers grew to become the primary HBCU basketball crew to win any nationwide championship, in accordance with The New York Instances. Their unparalleled success continued with three consecutive nationwide titles from 1957 to 1959.

For George Finley, one of many crew’s distinguished members, the White Home go to was an emotional end result of decades-long anticipation. “That is the best day of my life,” he stated. “I assumed this could by no means happen.”

The journey to the White Home was fraught with challenges, together with a bomb menace on their return journey residence in 1957 and years of advocacy for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Corridor of Fame. The Tennessee A&I Tigers lastly made it in 2019.

Congressional Consultant Gregory W. Meeks spearheaded the efforts to honor the crew, culminating of their White Home go to. Reflecting on their groundbreaking achievements, Harris penned a heartfelt tribute, recognizing the crew’s pivotal function in breaking boundaries each on and off the courtroom.
