A helicopter operated by the U.S. Park Police compelled three industrial plane to abort landings at Reagan Nationwide Airport (DCA) on Sunday, once more elevating considerations about airspace security within the Washington, D.C. area below the Trump administration.

Based on the Federal Aviation Administration, Southwest Flight 3716, American Eagle 5219, and United 2166 had been all instructed to carry out go-around maneuvers when a Park Police helicopter entered restricted airspace.

The FAA has restricted helicopter entry to DCA airspace following a Jan. 29 midair collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and a regional passenger jet that killed 67 individuals — marking the deadliest U.S. aviation catastrophe since 2001.

“The FAA doesn’t enable helicopters and airplanes to concurrently function within the airspace round Reagan Washington Nationwide Airport besides in uncommon circumstances,” the company posted Sunday on X. “Accordingly, air site visitors management canceled touchdown clearances for 3 flights earlier right this moment whereas a police helicopter was on an pressing mission in that airspace.”

The USA Park Police stated their helicopter was responding to a request to seek for lacking individuals following a automobile crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. “The mission was flown in coordination with the air site visitors management tower, and all correct procedures had been adopted,” USPP officers stated.

However the incident comes only one week after a Could 1 shut name when two industrial planes had been additionally compelled to abort landings as a result of an Military Black Hawk helicopter.

Based on FAA Assistant Administrator Chris Senn in an e-mail reported by Politico, that plane took a “scenic route across the Pentagon” as an alternative of flying on to its vacation spot, prompting a last-minute diversion of two jetliners.

Senn known as the Black Hawk’s maneuver a violation of security requirements. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy reportedly known as the episode “unacceptable.”

Following the January crash, the FAA imposed tighter restrictions within the crowded airspace round Reagan Nationwide. These included closing a key helicopter route alongside the Potomac River and requiring navy plane to broadcast their location utilizing satellite-based monitoring methods.

Regardless of these adjustments, Sunday’s disruption has renewed criticism over how airspace is managed, particularly involving navy plane.

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), the rating member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, blasted the Division of Protection and the FAA for what she known as an alarming sample of negligence.

“It’s outrageous that solely three months after an Military Black Hawk helicopter tragically collided with a passenger jet, the identical Military brigade once more flew a helicopter too near passenger jets on ultimate strategy at DCA,” Cantwell stated. “It’s far previous time for [Defense] Secretary [Pete] Hegseth and the FAA to offer our airspace the safety and security consideration it deserves.”
