Grammy-winning rapper Killer Mike joins National Symphony Orchestra – AFRO American Newspapers

(Black PR Wire) WASHINGTON — Rap artist, civic chief and activist Killer Mike—winner of three 2024 Grammy Awards®—will be a part of the Nationwide Symphony Orchestra in a brand new, unique orchestra program. The evening-length live performance will characteristic new preparations from Killer Mike’s critically acclaimed album “Michael,” led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke. This would be the orchestra’s first self-produced collaboration with a rap artist since its live performance with Widespread in 2017.

“Michael,” Atlanta rapper Killer Mike’s sixth solo album and his first in over a decade, was awarded Finest Rap Album final month on the 2024 Grammy Awards®. The album was hailed for its “musical adventurism” by Slate and for its “startling depth and heat” because it displays on his private journey.

The Nationwide Symphony Orchestra has an extended historical past of inventive innovation, collaborating with artists throughout genres. Most not too long ago, the NSO’s collaboration with Maxwell bought out the Kennedy Heart Live performance Corridor for 4 consecutive nights, and the orchestra has pushed the boundaries of orchestral music by performing with luminaries akin to Nas (2014), Kendrick Lamar (2015), and Widespread (2017). 

Moreover, latest collaborations with artists Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros, Audra McDonald, Anoushka Shankar, Pharrell, Black Women Rock, Jacob Collier, Laufey, and NSO Inventive Advisor Ben Folds and his Declassified sequence, underscore the orchestra’s dedication to various and boundary-pushing programming.
