WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden welcomed a high-wattage assortment of singers, authors, artists and humanitarians to the White Home on Tuesday to current them with medals — after which stole the present himself with a quip about in search of reelection.

Bruce Springsteen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mindy Kaling and Gladys Knight had been among the many 22 individuals and organizations being honored. When novelist Colson Whitehead’s award was introduced, Biden famous that the writer of “The Underground Railroad” and “The Nickel Boys” has already gained back-to-back Pulitzer Prizes.

The president, who is anticipated to announce for reelection this spring, rapidly picked it up

“Fairly good man,” he informed Whitehead. “I’m form of on the lookout for a back-to-back myself,” he added, drawing fun from the viewers.

It was a feel-good occasion within the East Room, because the honorees stepped ahead to obtain their awards one after the other. Louis-Dreyfus, who channeled Biden’s resume when she starred in “Veep,” jokingly sagged underneath the burden when the president positioned the medal for the humanities round her neck. “Wow!” she exclaimed.

Springsteen, along with his everyman persona, seemed incongruous in a black swimsuit. He was lauded for “his extraordinary contributions to the American songbook, and for being ‘The Boss.’” Poet and writer Richard Blanco shocked in a teal tuxedo.

Knight, the “empress of soul,” gave the president an enormous hug when he put the medal round her neck. Jaclyn Sallee, who acquired the medal on behalf of Native America Calling, a podcast and radio present, beamed with delight. So did social historian Earl Lewis, who, in keeping with the president, chronicles African American historical past and “explores how variety strengthens our nation.”

Biden joked that he opens his closet to search out one honoree, designer Vera Wang, inside — her garments, anyway — then mentioned, “Your clothes all the time look lovely on my spouse.”

The medals are Biden’s first batch of awards for the humanities and humanities and had been delayed by the pandemic. The president shocked Sir Elton John with a Nationwide Humanities Medal throughout a White Home musical occasion final September. He informed the gang how essential their work was, in maintaining American tradition alive and reminding individuals of our historical past – even the components we’d wish to overlook. The honorees work contains dance, artwork, design, historical past in addition to music, writing and philanthropy.

“You do make the nation higher, you make it a greater place,” Biden informed the gang earlier than they departed for a White Home reception.

The honorees didn’t carry out or communicate to the gang after they acquired their awards. However the U.S. Marine Corps band that usually performs for East Room ceremonies did orchestral numbers of Springsteen hits “Born to Run” and ”Born in the united statesA.”
