Garlin Gilchrist, Michigan’s first Black LG, launches historic campaign for governor

Garlin Gilchrist II, the primary Black individual elected as Michigan’s lieutenant governor, is throwing his hat within the 2026 race for governor, telling theGrio solely that he plans to take the state to “the following degree.”

“We’re at a generational inflection level,” stated Gilchrist, a former engineer and tech entrepreneur who left the non-public sector to be a neighborhood organizer and later political help earlier than he was tapped by Gretchen Whitmer to be her operating mate in 2018.
