Former rebel leader charged with crimes against humanity

A UN-backed courtroom within the Central African Republic stated it had charged ex-rebel chief Abdoulaye Hissene with crimes towards humanity and struggle crimes on Thursday.

Mokom’s militias, which referred to as themselves “anti-Balaka” — that means “anti-machete” — had been fashioned in response to the takeover of the capital, Bangui, by the Seleka.

He faces 20 counts of struggle crimes and crimes towards humanity for atrocities dedicated towards Muslim civilians within the CAR, a former French colony, by his self-proclaimed self-defence militias in 2013 and 2014.
