Florida A&M College has develop into a conventional powerhouse since beginning school soccer in 1907. The Rattlers’ résumé consists of over a dozen HBCU nationwide titles plus the 1978 NCAA championship in Division I-AA.

On Saturday, FAMU will honor a legendary alum whereas internet hosting one other historic program. The College of West Florida wasted no time in establishing itself amongst elites. The Argonauts gained the NCAA Division II nationwide title in 2019 – simply their fourth season of play. They’re nonetheless good, too, ranked fourth within the Division II coaches’ ballot with a pair of 35–3 victories on the season.

‘”We’ve bought our arms full,” FAMU head coach Willie Simmons mentioned this week throughout his information convention. “We all know they’re a extremely good soccer workforce, and we look ahead to the problem.”

The Argos need to restrict celebrations as FAMU (1–1) performs its first recreation on the newly renamed Ken Riley Area at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Riley, who final month was posthumously inducted into the Professional Soccer Corridor of Fame, quarterbacked the Rattlers to a few Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Convention crowns. He later served as FAMU’s head coach and athletic director after 15 seasons at cornerback for the Cincinnati Bengals.

“One among my highlights as a coach is to expire of the tunnel and lead our workforce onto Ken Riley Area,” Simmons mentioned Monday in the course of the Southwestern Athletic Convention (SWAC) media session. “Not solely defending the nation’s second-longest house win streak [15 games], however enjoying our first recreation at house on Ken Riley Area means the world to us.”

“We all know West Florida desires to be a spoiler of that nice second, and we’ve gotta put together ourselves mentally to be able to play our greatest recreation to stop that from occurring.”

They didn’t play their greatest in committing 5 turnovers and 12 penalties final week towards the College of South Florida. Regardless of these miscues, the Rattlers trailed by only a landing with 10 minutes left within the recreation, however the South Florida Bulls scored once more for the ultimate margin, 38–24.

Brilliant spots included quarterback Jeremy Moussa, who threw for a career-high 374 yards, and linebacker Isaiah Main, named SWAC Defensive Participant of the Week for his 11 tackles and two sacks. FAMU recorded six sacks general and held South Florida to only three factors off turnovers. The Rattlers have a high protection so far within the Soccer Championship Collection, ranked first in sacks, fourth in tackles for loss, and tenth in dashing protection. Simmons mentioned the unit might develop into the perfect he’s ever been round.

They’ll be examined by West Florida quarterback Peewee Jarrett (listed at 6-foot-4 and 240 kilos), the Gulf South Convention Offensive Participant of the Week after finishing 21 of 28 passes for 329 yards and 4 touchdowns towards McKendree College. Jarrett leads Division II in completion share and ranks sixth in passing effectivity. The Argos additionally boast defensive lineman John McMullen, the GSC’s reigning Defensive Participant of the Week who helped maintain McKendree to -32 yards dashing.

First-year coach Kaleb Nobles was the quarterback in West Florida’s inaugural season (2016) after which spent three seasons as an Argonauts assistant. His workforce harbors championship aspirations and is worked up to play a much bigger opponent with a profitable custom, particularly a neighbor like FAMU, ranked No. 24 within the Soccer Championship Subdivision (FCS) coaches’ ballot. Competitors for recruits and victories within the football-crazed Sunshine State hits in a different way than most different locations.

“Everyone outdoors our constructing has been speaking about this for a very long time, ever because the schedule got here out,” Nobles mentioned Tuesday on his weekly present. “Our guys are doing job of specializing in what they should do. With the ability to scrimmage towards [FAMU] a pair years in the past was nice. They’ve some gifted guys, and so they’ll be a extremely good problem for us general.”

Simmons isn’t taking West Florida evenly. Division II groups have toppled a number of FCS opponents this season, together with Miles School over Alabama State, Central State over Mississippi Valley State, and Bowie State over Delaware State. Moreover that, Simmons is aware of the kind of squad FAMU is about to face.

“In the event you’re enjoying a workforce from Florida, you’re going to play a workforce that’s quick, a workforce that’s powerful, and a workforce that’s athletic,” he mentioned. “There could also be a measurement disparity on the traces, however that’s what you anticipate once you play down in competitors or up in competitors. However on the perimeter, it’s going to be a reasonably even matchup.”
