Black Greek Letter Organizations had been by no means meant to be decorative.

They had been constructed as engines of service, resistance, and collective energy — born on HBCU campuses when Black college students had been shut out of alternative however decided to create it anyway. Our founders weren’t chasing aesthetics or social clout. They had been organizing, educating, and agitating in a rustic that informed them they didn’t belong.

And now, greater than a century later, the Divine 9 finds itself at a crossroads.

I say that as a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Integrated, deeply rooted within the magnificence, self-discipline, and sisterhood of our traditions — and equally conscious that custom alone is not going to maintain us.

Gen Z is altering Greek life in actual time. They manage digitally, transfer on the velocity of social media, and perceive branding and visibility in methods earlier generations by no means needed to. They’re unapologetically public about their Greek identification, typically constructing platforms, followings, and affect far past the chapter degree (a lot to the chagrin of old style Greeks who wore that privateness veil with honor).

That shift shouldn’t be the issue, although. The stress arises once we confuse visibility with objective — when a step reveals a development increased than voter drives, when aesthetics overshadow activism, and once we begin measuring influence in likes as a substitute of laws, coverage change, or group outcomes.

Our organizations weren’t based to be content material. They had been established to be catalysts.

There’s an actual push and pull occurring proper now between legacy and modernization. Some alumni members fear that innovation threatens custom. Some youthful members really feel constrained by rituals they don’t totally perceive. Either side have legitimate considerations — and either side are obligatory.

What’s lacking is intentional bridge-building.

Alumni members carry a accountability that goes past critique. We’re the stewards. The protectors. The institutional reminiscence. However we’re additionally tasked with evolution. It’s not sufficient to say, “That’s not how we did it.” We should additionally ask, “How does this era have to do it now — and the way will we information them with out dimming their mild?”

Steerage doesn’t imply management. It means context. It means instructing why service issues as a lot as visibility, why political engagement shouldn’t be optionally available, why our letters carry weight — and consequence.

The reality is that BGLOs have misplaced a few of their political muscle.

Not as a result of the need isn’t there, however as a result of the main focus has fractured. At our peak, we had been a coordinated, strategic, and relentless crew. We mobilized voters. We influenced laws. We held elected officers accountable — and we did it collectively.

As we enterprise into 2026 and an more and more unstable political local weather, that function isn’t just related once more — it’s pressing.

Our communities are beneath assault in ways in which demand an organized response. Voting rights. Schooling. Reproductive freedom. Financial fairness. Environmental justice. These aren’t summary points. They’re lived realities for the individuals we serve.

Think about what may occur if the Divine 9 unified round a proactive civic agenda — not simply throughout election cycles, however as a sustained motion. Think about the facility of digital-savvy Gen Z members paired with the strategic knowledge of seasoned alumni. Think about coordinated messaging, shared targets, and a renewed dedication to our authentic objective.

This isn’t a name to desert custom.

It’s a name to activate it.

To keep in mind that stepping, strolling, and social media had been by no means the endgame — they had been instruments. The mission has all the time been larger than us as people. Greater than chapters. Greater than tendencies.

We owe it to our founders. We owe it to our future members. And most significantly, we owe it to our communities.

The Divine 9 has all the time been at its greatest once we transfer collectively — not backward, not caught — however ahead, with objective.

Assist the Defender

Our pledge is to raise options, share successes, and amplify the experiences of Black individuals. We can not do it alone.
