Defying all odds, 79-year-old man earns bachelor’s degree after many years in prison

79-year-old Rev. Willie Ryals, who started attending a web-based college in 2021, has lastly earned his bachelor’s diploma in legal justice.

In accordance with the Tallahassee Democrat, he first enrolled in Florida A&M College’s Developmental Analysis College as an adolescent however left to pursue a profession as a singer with quite a few bands. He finally enlisted within the U.S. Military in 1962.

Defending himself towards invaders throughout a home break-in led him to jail, the place he acquired a sentence of 10 to twenty years for aggravated manslaughter. Ryals completed highschool and enrolled in faculty whereas he was a prisoner. In 1971, he was given an early launch from jail however his time there motivated him to pursue a level in legal justice.

“Whereas I used to be in jail, I noticed a necessity for legal justice reform. There are too many younger Blacks going to jail for crimes that they didn’t commit, and there must be some modifications,” he stated.

After jail, he established himself in Gadsden County, Florida, the place he’s now the pastor of Zion Hope Group Baptist Church. Final month, the Tallahassee Democrat reported that he’ll settle for his diploma from the American Intercontinental College and switch 80 three days following his commencement.

“I’m completely happy for myself as a result of my father at all times needed me to go after a level. He’s handed and gone, however I’m holding this promise,” Ryals informed the information outlet.

His spouse and youngsters are happy with him for with the ability to mix courses with dwelling and pastoral duties.

“He would miss a few of his courses due to my physician’s appointments and must catch up, however he by no means gave up,” Ryals’ wfie Mandy Woodard Ryals stated. “He works all evening and generally must prop his legs up for the swelling, however he would nonetheless go after it.
