DC Woman Accused of Stealing $266K From Her 95-Year-Old Grandfather

Nationwide — Erica Hopper, a 45-year-old African American lady from Washington, D.C., is accused of stealing greater than $266,000 from her 95-year-old grandfather after taking management of his funds. Police say she used the cash to fund private luxuries, pay payments, and hire a high-end residence.

Authorities stated Hopper was granted energy of legal professional in December 2020, giving her entry to her grandfather’s accounts. As a substitute of safeguarding his belongings, investigators allege she misused the funds for her personal profit over a span of 4 years.

In response to WUSA9, Montgomery County Police stated Hopper spent greater than $25,000 on automotive funds and over $49,000 paying off her bank card debt. Investigators additionally stated she used greater than $35,000 of her grandfather’s cash to cowl hire for a luxurious residence in Washington, D.C.

The investigation started after a involved member of the family filed a grievance, prompting detectives to evaluation the transactions. Their findings led to a number of expenses, together with theft of over $100,000, theft scheme of over $100,000, acquiring property from a weak grownup over $100,000, embezzlement, and fraudulent identification theft involving $25,000 to $100,000.

Police stated Hopper was processed and later launched on an unsecured private bond as she awaits trial.
