Conviction of Brooklyn man who spent 14 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit overturned

Brooklyn resident Steven Ruffin, who spent 14 years in jail for a homicide he didn’t commit, had his conviction overturned on Thursday. The case, initially investigated by disgraced ex-NYPD Det. Louis Scarcella, revealed critical errors, together with Ruffin being coerced into confessing after a number of denials.

Overcome with emotion, Ruffin expressed aid as Brooklyn Supreme Court docket Justice Matthew D’Emic formally overturned his 1996 manslaughter conviction, as reported by the New York Submit.

Ruffin was 18 when he was convicted of the 1996 homicide of 16-year-old James Deligny in Crown Heights, a case later revealed to be a results of mistaken id. Deligny was reportedly focused after robbing Ruffin’s sister, Diana, of her earrings, based on the DA’s Workplace.

Following the mugging, a manhunt ensued, resulting in a confrontation between members of a gaggle and Deligny just a few blocks from Ruffin’s dwelling. A battle broke out, leading to Deligny being shot. Throughout interrogations by Scarcella, who was investigating the case, Ruffin, then 17, denied being the shooter on two events.

Through the investigation into Ruffin’s wrongful conviction, the Conviction Overview Unit report revealed that Ruffin’s estranged father, who was a police officer, was dropped at the precinct to steer his son to admit to the homicide, falsely stating that he had shot the sufferer 4 instances.

Ruffin was finally launched on parole in 2010. Nonetheless, it took over a decade after his launch for prosecutors to reexamine the case, uncovering a number of errors within the unique investigation.
