Climate Education Meets Opportunity at West LA College Career Fair  – Los Angeles Sentinel

Standing earlier than a crowd of scholars, households, and employers, Tavares mirrored on the influence of the Middle’s groundbreaking work. 

“Over 100 college students celebrated their midway mark of summer season internship,” she stated, smiling. “We wish them to begin pondering what the following factor shall be. West LA Faculty is the appropriate place. Local weather change has been our focus and motivation, and it introduced out everybody locally.”

Beneath her management, the Local weather Middle has change into a hub for collaboration and innovation, bringing collectively educators, employers, and civic leaders. 

“We created internship packages, collaborated with academics to combine local weather develop into their programs, and linked with excessive colleges, neighborhood schools, and neighborhood leaders,” Tavares defined. “We wish folks to see our house as an extension of their neighborhood. The final two years we piloted so many various tasks that different locations can use as a blueprint. It is a uncommon factor—they don’t do that in all places. The Local weather Middle, dwelling to the nation’s first Affiliate Diploma in Local weather Change & Environmental Research, is proving that training and motion go hand in hand. College students of all majors can take part within the Middle’s paid internships, gaining hands-on expertise in environmental coverage, clear vitality, ocean conservation, and extra. For Tavares, the internships are greater than resume-builders—they’re launching pads for management. 

A Profession Honest with Function 

The “Constructing Resilient Futures Profession Honest,” produced in partnership with the Workplace of Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, introduced collectively over 30 employers, many providing rapid job and internship alternatives. It wasn’t only a recruitment occasion—it was a showcase of how training and workforce growth can merge to handle local weather change and financial alternative on the similar time. 

Los Angeles Neighborhood Faculty District Trustee and candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction Nichelle Henderson praised the interns’ work and the Middle’s imaginative and prescient earlier than introducing Assemblymember Bryan.

When Bryan took the stage, he spoke in regards to the significance of getting a Local weather Change Research diploma and a devoted middle for local weather training proper locally.

For Tavares, the day was about extra than simply connecting folks to jobs—it was about embedding local weather consciousness into the material of the neighborhood. 

“That is about ensuring our neighbors have entry to careers that not solely maintain them however maintain our world,” she stated. “After we open the doorways of the faculty to the neighborhood, we open the door to a greater future.” 

Over the past two years, the Middle has piloted packages that are actually being checked out as fashions for different establishments. With continued assist from elected officers like Assemblymember Bryan and neighborhood champions, Tavares believes the blueprint created at WLAC could be replicated in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles and past. 

“We’ve proven that if you mix training, alternative, and neighborhood partnership, you create actual change,” she stated. “And that’s precisely what we’re constructing right here—collectively.”
