Civil rights icon Andrew Young reflects on Dr. King’s legacy and America’s progress on MLK Day

One of many final surviving members of King’s inside circle, Younger sat down for an unique interview on PBS-TV’s “The Chavis Chronicles” with Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. (NNPA NEWSWIRE) — Because the nation commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, civil rights icon, diplomat and former Atlanta mayor Andrew Younger mirrored on King’s legacy and progress in America because the Nineteen Sixties.

One of many final surviving members of King’s inside circle, Younger sat down for an unique interview on PBS-TV’s “The Chavis Chronicles” with Nationwide Newspaper Publishers Affiliation President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., the place he shared useful insights into his historic journey as a pacesetter of the civil rights motion and his personal enduring legacy.

“I do that,” Younger stated, reflecting on difficult injustices just like the false arrest and imprisonment of the Wilmington Ten within the Seventies, “as a result of it’s the precise factor to do. From his beginnings in segregated faculties in New Orleans to his early commencement from Howard College and later research at Hartford Theological Seminary, Younger’s dedication to justice emerged throughout his time as a pastor in southern Georgia. Organizing voter registration drives within the face of demise threats, he performed an important function within the campaigns resulting in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Elected to congress in 1972, Younger turned the primary African-American consultant from the Deep South since Reconstruction. His legislative efforts included establishing the U.S. Institute for Peace, The African Improvement Financial institution and the Chattahoochee River Nationwide Park. He left an indelible mark on the town by negotiating federal funds for important infrastructure initiatives in Atlanta.

In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Younger as the primary African American ambassador to the United Nations, the place he performed an important function in shaping U.S.-Africa coverage primarily based on human rights. His efforts contributed to ending White-minority rule in Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Reflecting on his experiences, Younger shares poignant moments throughout the interview, together with going through violence throughout the Civil Rights Motion. 

“When the Klan got here marching down locally, they needed to impress a struggle. He acknowledges the challenges however underscores the alternatives for schooling and progress.

As Younger displays on Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, he interprets it as a name for equal alternative. “We’re now not slaves; we now have equal alternative to make this an excellent nation if we’re capable of work onerous. The academic alternatives are opening up,” Younger stated. He acknowledges the partnership with White of us that contributed to Atlanta’s success.

Younger stated he stays optimistic in regards to the nation’s future, echoing Dr. King’s phrases: “It’s inevitable to me that this nation, as Martin Luther King stated, will dwell out, someday, the true which means of its creed.”
