Cecil L. ‘Chip’ Murray, influential pastor and civil rights leader in Los Angeles, dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Rev. Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray, an influential pastor and civil rights chief who used his tenure at one among Los Angeles’ oldest church buildings to uplift the predominantly Black neighborhoods of South Los Angeles following one of many nation’s worst race riots, has died. He was 94.

Murray died on April 5, based on an announcement from the USC Heart for Faith and Civic Tradition. He died of pure causes, his son, Drew Murray, informed the Los Angeles Instances.

Born in Lakeland, Florida, in 1929, Murray spent 27 years because the pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles. The church was small when he took over. However by the point he retired, it had grown into an 18,000-member megachurch.

In 1992, the acquittal of 4 law enforcement officials who have been caught on video violently beating Rodney King triggered an explosion of violence within the predominantly Black neighborhoods of South Los Angeles.

Murray emerged as a chilled presence and was a frequent visitor on nationwide tv information exhibits. He used his connections with the town’s political and enterprise leaders to lift cash for restoration efforts, together with loans for companies and help for folks displaced by the violence.

“Whereas many well-known preachers have roots in Southern California, Chip Murray is unparalleled in his means to mobilize the town of Los Angeles to heal the inequities associated to race and revenue inequality,” mentioned Donald E. Miller, the Leonard Ok. Firestone Professor of Faith at USC and co-founder of the Heart for Faith and Civic Tradition.

Throughout his time as pastor, First AME turned a must-stop for outstanding politicians, together with former presidents George W. Bush and Invoice Clinton together with former California governors Pete Wilson, Grey Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Underneath Murray’s management, the church labored to rework the neighborhood by way of a bunch of packages and initiatives, together with job coaching, help for foster youngsters and growing inexpensive housing items for low-income households.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass mentioned Murray devoted his life to service, neighborhood and “placing God first in all issues.”

“I had absolutely the honor of working with him, worshiping with him, and searching for his counsel,” Bass mentioned. “My coronary heart is with the First AME congregation and neighborhood immediately as we replicate on a legacy that modified this metropolis without end.”

After retiring as First AME’s pastor, he joined the college on the College of Southern California because the Tansey Professor of Christian Ethics, the place he educated about 1,000 religion leaders within the “Murray Methodology”of church management.
