CBS To Develop First Black Daytime Soap Opera In 35 Years

CBS has teamed up with the NAACP to develop the primary daytime cleaning soap opera with a predominantly Black solid since 1985’s “Generations.”

CBS has teamed up with the NAACP to develop the primary daytime cleaning soap opera with a predominantly Black solid since 1985’s “Generations.”

Titled “The Gates,” the brand new cleaning soap opera follows the lives of a rich Black household residing in a complicated gated group, Selection stories. It comes as a part of CBS’ content material partnership with NAACP and brings on Michele Val Jean to function author, showrunner, and government producer.

Val Jean is a famend veteran within the cleaning soap opera world having served as a author on “The Daring and the Stunning” since 2012 in addition to boasting writing credit on “Basic Hospital” and “Santa Barbara.” The present will air on CBS Tv Community and be produced by CBS Studios NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.

The president of the CBS Studios NAACP enterprise Sheila Ducksworth has been tapped to government produce the cleaning soap opera together with Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, and Kimberly Doebereiner.

“’The Gates’ might be the whole lot we love about daytime drama, from a brand new and contemporary perspective,” Ducksworth mentioned. “This collection will salute an viewers that has been historically underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking second for broadcast tv.”

The “Faculty Hill” producer went on to tease the “juicy storylines” viewers can anticipate from the Black culture-driven collection that can fill a 35-year-old void in daytime tv.

“With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black tradition entrance and heart, ‘The Gates’ may have impactful illustration, one of many key touchstones of the enterprise,” Ducksworth shared. “I’m excited to develop this challenge with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime tv, and the NAACP, whose enduring dedication to Black voices and artists is each highly effective and galvanizing. I additionally need to thank CBS’ George Cheeks, NAACP’s Derrick Johnson and P&G’s Marc Pritchard for his or her private involvement and help to take our subsequent step ahead with ‘The Gates.’”

“The Gates” can be the primary greenlit cleaning soap opera in years. Solely three cleaning soap operas stay on daytime tv together with “The Daring and the Stunning” and “Younger and the Stressed” on CBS and “Basic Hospital” on ABC.
