BX BP Vanessa Gibson honors Black women and girls in education

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson honored Black girls and ladies in training on the “My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) Unconference” on the College of Mount St. Vincent campus on Wednesday, March 27. 

“Our younger kids and teenagers deserve each alternative obtainable to amass the talents wanted to thrive and prosper as adults,” stated Gibson in an announcement. “Via the ‘My Sister’s Keeper Unconference,’ we spoke on to over 1,000 ladies and younger girls throughout the Bronx about our unwavering dedication to making sure that they obtain the mandatory help to turn into the leaders of the longer term.”

The MSK Bronx Committee consists of leaders from all Bronx college districts and focuses on constructing sisterhood by means of empowerment, management, fairness and inclusion, and confidence-building seminars. They honored former New York Metropolis Faculties Chancellor Dr. Meisha Ross-Porter, New York State Commissioner of Training Dr. Betty A. Rosa, and College of Mt. Saint Vincent President Dr. Susan R. Burns.

Greater than 1,000 college students from grades 4–12 packed the auditorium. The younger ladies loved dance performances from the South Bronx Academy of Utilized Media dance workforce, a musical choice from the Songs of Solomon Inspirational Ensemble, and a dwell set from DJ Perly. 

“It was such an honor to have the chance to welcome greater than 1,000 younger girls to our campus for the My Sister’s Keeper Bronx Unconference,” stated Burns. “Mount Saint Vincent was the primary establishment to supply superior training to younger girls in New York, and whereas the college has grown to serve college students of all genders, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, our mission stays fixed: to offer transformational instructional alternatives that allow all learners to understand their potential and apply their expertise on the Proper Place on the River towards lives of management, service, and innovation.”

The MSK workforce additionally introduced citations to 3 scholar emcees and three finalists in an essay -writing contest known as MSK Embodiment of Sisterhood.
