Buddhist Monks Stop In Selma For Their ‘Walk For Peace’ Mission

Buddhist Monks are advocating for change with their “Stroll For Peace” throughout America, stopping in a single historic metropolis for justice.

The group started its 2,300-mile stroll on Oct. 26 in Fort Price, Texas. Regardless of plans to finish their hike on the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., subsequent 12 months, the monks made a pit cease at a monumental place.

On Dec. 19, the group made it to Selma, Alabama, additionally recognized for its historical past within the Civil Rights Motion. Selma is most well-known for its 1965 march to Montgomery to advocate for voting rights. The primary of many marches, led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., resulted within the notorious “Bloody Sunday,” the place white supremacists attacked a number of marchers on the Edmund Pettis Bridge. Nonetheless, the tragedy grew to become a mark of resilience and alter for the activists, turning the tide on voting rights for Black People. Now, it stays a pivotal place for remembrance, with the Monks paying tribute to those that fought for change on that very stroll.

The Fort Price-based Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Heart organized the stroll to advertise kindness, compassion, and unity with every stride. Every day, they trekked 20 to 25 miles, ending up in Selma for a group luncheon on the Historic Riverfront Park.

On the schedule, group members joined monks on their stroll to the Civil Rights Memorial Park. The hassle expressed a joint dedication to the values of equality and peace for all, irrespective of one’s station in life.

With their canine companion Aloka strutting alongside them, the stroll had not encountered sunny skies all the approach via. Nonetheless, the monks have remained steadfast in finishing their mission, irrespective of the climate or obstacles.
