Black Women Leaders Host Screenings For ‘The Perfect Neighbor’

Black ladies leaders have hosted 100 watch events for the Oscar-nominated documentary.

Black ladies leaders have mobilized forward of the 97th Academy Awards by organizing group screenings and discussions across the Oscar-nominated documentary The Good Neighbor.

Led by Win With Black Girls (WWBW), in partnership with the Standing within the Hole Fund, the initiative highlights the continued name for justice for Ajike “AJ” Owens, the topic of the documentary.

Utilizing actual footage, the movie revisits the deadly June 2, 2023, taking pictures in Ocala, Florida, the place Susan Louise Lorincz, a white neighbor, shot and killed Owens. The nationwide screenings and open discussions intention to spark conversations about racial violence, group security, voter engagement, and legal guidelines reminiscent of Stand Your Floor.

“Black ladies have all the time organized in moments when the nation’s conscience is being examined. These group screenings are about greater than a documentary,” stated Jotaka Eaddy, founding father of Win With Black Girls and a 2026 Girls of Energy Luminary Award recipient. “They’re about remembrance, about justice for AJ, and about ensuring that our communities are knowledgeable, engaged, and ready to take motion—from voting to coverage change. When Black ladies collect, dialog turns into a motion.”

The group just lately celebrated internet hosting 100 group watch events centered across the movie.

“Because the tragic homicide of Ajike “AJ” Owens, Win With Black Girls has stood with AJ’s household—lifting her identify, advocating for justice, and organizing our communities,” WWBW shared in an Instagram announcement.

“This second is about greater than awards. It’s about amplification, narrative energy, and justice for AJ,” the group added.

The grassroots watch gatherings vary from small lounge discussions amongst family and friends to bigger occasions hosted by group leaders, church buildings, and civic teams. The movie, now streaming on Netflix, is directed by Geeta Gandbhir and produced by Black ladies, together with Alisa Payne and Takema Robinson.

It has earned greater than 24 award nominations, together with the aforementioned Oscar.

Since Owens’ homicide in 2023, Win With Black Girls—an intergenerational community of lots of of 1000’s of Black ladies leaders throughout enterprise, politics, tradition, and advocacy—has used its platform to push for justice, assist Owens’ household, and hold consideration on the broader points her story highlights.

The Standing within the Hole Fund, based in 2023 in honor of Owens and others misplaced to racial violence, was created earlier than The Good Neighbor turned broadly recognized and now leads the movie’s influence marketing campaign.
