Black Woman Makes History as First Full-Time HBCU Female Football Announcer in Alabama

Nationwide — Thai Floyd, an African American girl from Huntsville, Alabama, has made historical past as the primary full-time feminine play-by-play announcer for Alabama A&M College’s soccer staff. She’s going to name the Bulldogs’ video games all through the 2025 season, marking a significant milestone in HBCU sports activities media.

Alabama A&M, an HBCU, performs within the SWAC convention. The college selected Floyd to be the voice of its soccer staff this season, making her not solely a trailblazer for the college but in addition one of many few ladies to carry this position at any Black school or college, in accordance with HBCU Gameday.

Floyd is a graduate of Florida A&M College, one other HBCU, and has constructed a stable profession in sports activities broadcasting. She most lately labored as a digital media specialist for Alabama A&M athletics and has lined sports activities in any respect ranges, from highschool to skilled.

Her work has appeared on NBC Sports activities Philadelphia, ESPN’s Andscape, and Sports activities Illustrated’s HBCU Legends. She’s additionally served as a sideline reporter and play-by-play commentator for ESPN+ and ESPNU, together with assignments for FBS bowl video games and the Celebration Bowl.

Floyd expressed gratitude for the chance, saying, “This chance is a dream realized, and I’m deeply grateful to be trusted with it. To be the primary girl to function the full-time voice of Alabama A&M soccer — and probably the primary to carry this position at any HBCU — is larger than me. It’s about legacy, illustration, and reminding younger Black women that we belong in each room, each sales space, each broadcast.”

She additionally paid tribute to Tiffany Greene, a longtime sports activities broadcaster and mentor who helped form her journey. Floyd hopes to hold that very same torch ahead and encourage the subsequent technology.

With this appointment, Alabama A&M takes a historic step in advancing inclusion and visibility for ladies and Black voices in school sports activities broadcasting.
