Whereas campaigning for his return to the White Home throughout the 2024 election, Donald Trump warned Black voters that undocumented immigrants had been taking their so-called “Black jobs.”

“They’re taking Black jobs now, and it may very well be 18, it may very well be 19, and even 20 million individuals. They’re taking Black jobs,” Trump mentioned throughout his June 27, 2024, presidential debate in opposition to former President Joe Biden. The comment was shortly slammed by advocates and Democrats as each false and racially divisive.

Trump repeated the declare alongside the marketing campaign path, together with his explosive interview with the Nationwide Affiliation of Black Journalists (NABJ).

“Coming from the border are hundreds of thousands and hundreds of thousands of people who occur to be taking Black jobs,” Trump asserted on the time, prompting gasps within the room of Black reporters. “They’re taking the employment away from Black individuals…they’re coming in [and] they’re invading.”

A 12 months later, Trump is now again within the White Home, the place he has adopted by way of on his marketing campaign promise to detain and deport mass populations of undocumented immigrants. Nevertheless, what has not come into fruition is his promise to safe extra Black jobs.

As theGrio reported final week, the latest jobs report revealed that the Black unemployment price spiked to its highest degree because the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

“Throughout the latest presidential marketing campaign, we heard the offensive rhetoric that Black individuals had ‘Black jobs’ and that migrants had been taking these jobs from Black individuals,” mentioned World Black Financial Discussion board President and CEO Alphonso David. He informed theGrio, “These claims had been categorically false then and the current job numbers amplify that time.”

He continued, “Regardless of the aggressive and in lots of instances lawless makes an attempt to deport migrants, the unemployment price for Black individuals in the US has climbed to 7.2%, representing the very best degree because the pandemic’s peak influence and better than the general U.S. inhabitants.”

Markus Batchelor, political director at Individuals For the American Means, informed theGrio of the most recent jobs report, “Similar to the employees on his development tasks, Donald Trump wrote the Black neighborhood a nasty verify throughout the marketing campaign.”

Trump’s financial insurance policies, most notably his tariff program, which financial specialists say is inflicting uncertainty for buyers and dangers driving up costs for items, are being blamed for the most recent Black unemployment numbers. Trump has additionally fired or laid off tens of 1000’s of federal employees in an try to shrink the federal authorities, which disproportionately hires Black employees.

Batchelor defined, “For all of the ‘Black Jobs’ he mentioned immigrants would take, Donald Trump has taken essentially the most — slashing help for Black farmers, gutting a disproportionately Black federal workforce, and even forcing non-public companies to finish efforts that diversify their workforce.”

“This isn’t a president who got here in and mentioned, ‘We’re going to extend funding for MWBE (Minority- and Girls-owned Enterprise Enterprises). This isn’t a president who mentioned we’re going to work on wages,” mentioned Jamarr Brown, government director of Shade of Change PAC, the political arm of the progressive social justice group of the identical title.

Brown informed theGrio, “This can be a president who got here in and [eliminated] jobs, who’s combating labor unions, which struggle for the safety and dignity of employees each single day.”

The political operative mentioned Trump, who has made his anti-diversity, fairness, and inclusion agenda a serious function of his administration, has “achieved the whole lot to chop alternatives” and “doesn’t care” about creating an inclusive financial agenda, significantly for Black People who largely didn’t “vote for him and any of his extremist allies.”

Although Trump appeared to middle “Black jobs” throughout his 2024 marketing campaign, Brown argued that it was by no means an precise marketing campaign promise however moderately a “marketing campaign gimmick” to “confuse Black individuals with misinformation and disinformation” in regards to the report of President Biden’s administration.

“He needed to interact Black individuals in some fable that they weren’t being helped by the earlier [Biden] administration, which, in the event you have a look at the investments of that administration, billions of {dollars} going to the Black neighborhood,” he defined. “We haven’t seen any of that from Donald Trump.”

Following Friday’s jobs report, which additionally revealed a slowing of hiring with solely 73,000 jobs added in July, Trump as an alternative blamed Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, accusing her of falsifying statistical information with out proof to help his declare. The president instantly fired McEntarfer, who was appointed by President Biden.

“So what he’s doing is to get rid of individuals who will deliver the information and the reality and the truth of the place our economic system sits proper now,” mentioned Brown. “That’s much more harmful than the low numbers that had been reported.”
