Black Teen Wins $250K Settlement After Traumatic Wrongful Traffic Stop

Nationwide — La’Nisha Hemingway, an 18-year-old African American teen from South Carolina, acquired a $250,000 settlement after a wrongful visitors cease left her traumatized. The incident occurred on Could 3 in North Myrtle Seashore when police mistook her automotive for a stolen automobile and detained her at gunpoint.

The incident started when Officer Kayla Wallace pulled over Hemingway, who was driving a darkish grey Dodge Charger. They have been trying to find a stolen silver Dodge Challenger with a very totally different license plate. A month later, Hemingway filed a federal lawsuit accusing the officers of false imprisonment, extreme power, and negligence.

Town settled the lawsuit for $250,000, however no additional motion was taken in opposition to the officers, who stay employed. For the reason that incident, Hemingway has struggled with nervousness, PTSD, and melancholy, she stated throughout a information convention.
