Black Nurse Wrongfully Blamed for Patient’s Death Awarded $20M Settlement

Nationwide — DonQuenick Joppy, a 41-year-old African American ICU nurse from Aurora, Colorado, has received a $20 million jury award after being wrongfully blamed for a affected person’s dying, subjected to racial discrimination, and fired for talking out.

Joppy started working at The Medical Heart of Aurora in 2017. Two years later, she discovered herself caring for a 93-year-old affected person who was in septic shock and required a ventilator. In response to Atlanta Black Star, the affected person’s household determined to withdraw life assist, and Joppy adopted directions from a respiratory therapist over the telephone. She remained with the household because the affected person died peacefully.

A health worker later confirmed the affected person died of pure causes. Nonetheless, the hospital claimed Joppy acted exterior her position by shutting off the ventilator herself. Officers accused her of suffocating the affected person and reported her to state regulators. She was fired weeks later, and prosecutors charged her with manslaughter and negligent dying earlier than dropping the case in 2021.

In her lawsuit, Joppy mentioned the hospital used the incident as an excuse to finish her profession as a result of she had complained about racial discrimination. She described years of mistreatment by supervisors and cost nurses, together with verbal abuse, false accusations, and unfair workloads in comparison with her white colleagues. She additionally claimed she was blocked from promotions and positioned on a efficiency plan as retaliation.

Her case went to trial in August 2024. After a seven-day trial, jurors agreed she had been retaliated towards and discriminated towards. They awarded her $20 million — $5 million in compensatory damages and $15 million in punitive damages. A choose authorized the decision.

Joppy mentioned the decision restored her integrity after years of false accusations and hoped her case would result in change for different Black nurses. The hospital, nevertheless, denied wrongdoing and introduced plans to enchantment, insisting Joppy violated hospital coverage.

After years of instability, Joppy mentioned she seems to be ahead to rebuilding her life and offering a secure house for her daughter.
