Black New Yorkers’ health depends on Medicaid

Medicaid is a lifeline for Black communities all through New York and throughout the nation. Greater than 1.5 million Black New Yorkers depend on it for important healthcare, together with HIV remedy, maternal care, and continual illness administration. But, Congress simply voted to chop $880 billion from Medicaid — placing our well being and lives in danger.

For a lot of, Medicaid is the distinction between life and demise. I do know this firsthand. As a Black man residing with HIV, diabetes, and hypertension, I’ve struggled to get entry to high quality care. Once I was homeless, sleeping in subway vehicles, I cycled out and in of remedy. I didn’t belief the healthcare system. I used to be depressed and suicidal, feeling like I had nowhere to show.

That was earlier than Amida Care; my Medicaid Particular Wants Well being Plan; and Harlem United, my healthcare supplier, helped me rebuild my life.

With out Medicaid, I might by no means have been in a position to entry and keep engaged in care. When my physique turned proof against my HIV medicine and I turned dangerously ailing, they ensured I obtained the brand new remedy I wanted — even when my pharmacy mistakenly refused to fill my prescription.

With out Medicaid, I might have ended up in emergency rooms, my situation worsening, racking up astronomical medical payments. I most likely wouldn’t be right here at this time.

That’s the reason I’m deeply alarmed by these proposed Medicaid cuts. They’ll cripple this system, decreasing entry to preventive care and forcing extra folks to depend on overcrowded emergency rooms, resulting in worse well being outcomes and better prices for the system general. These cuts may also devastate our communities economically. Hospitals, clinics, and suppliers that primarily serve Medicaid sufferers might be pressured to put off employees or shut down completely.

The results might be felt throughout each state, however particularly in Black communities, the place charges of continual sicknesses like hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart illness stay disproportionately excessive. Black People make up 13.6% of the U.S. inhabitants however account for 20% of Medicaid enrollees.

Medicaid growth underneath the Reasonably priced Care Act has been the one best coverage for decreasing racial disparities in healthcare entry. It led to historic reductions in racial well being disparities, however the biggest positive aspects occurred in states that expanded Medicaid. Analysis confirms that growth saves lives: States that adopted it noticed a 51% discount within the hole between uninsured Black and white adults. Within the states that refused growth, 1.5 million adults lack protection, 61 p.c% of whom are folks of shade. Reducing Medicaid would reinforce racial inequities in healthcare and deny communities entry to the medical providers they should survive and thrive.

As the most important supply of insurance coverage for folks residing with HIV in america, Medicaid is essential to the struggle towards HIV and has been instrumental in New York’s efforts to finish the epidemic. By making certain entry to lifesaving antiretroviral remedy and preventive care, together with PrEP, this system has helped scale back new HIV transmissions and enhance well being outcomes. Slashing these important assets would jeopardize this progress, finally resulting in worse well being outcomes and better prices in the long term.

Medicaid is greater than only a well being program — it’s a pillar of financial and racial justice. It ensures that working-class and low-income households, folks with disabilities, and seniors can see a physician, fill a prescription, and obtain lifesaving remedy. With out it, thousands and thousands might be left with out care, deepening racial well being disparities and forcing households to decide on between paying for drugs or placing meals on the desk.

I ask our elected officers in Washington: How a lot is my life price to you? How a lot are the lives of thousands and thousands of Black People price to you? Slashing Medicaid isn’t just a funds determination; it’s a direct assault on our well being and our future. We can not afford to go backward. Our representatives should rise up and shield Medicaid earlier than extra lives are placed on the road.
