Black Democrats defend Tlaib and her ‘free speech’ after House censure

Black members of Congress are standing by U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib after the only real Palestinian-American serving in Congress was censured by her Home colleagues for remarks she made in regards to the Israel-Hamas battle.

Earlier this week, Rep. Wealthy McCormick, R-Ga., launched a decision to censure the Michigan congresswoman, accusing her of selling false narratives relating to Hamas’ assault on Israel on Oct. 7 and calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.

Within the decision, McCormick particularly talked about he wished Tlaib censured for her use of the slogan “from the river to the ocean,” which some deem antisemitic.

Tlaib was additionally censured for her allegation that Israel bombed a hospital in Gaza that left a whole bunch lifeless and for stating that the circumstances that Palestinians confronted within the Gaza Strip might “result in resistance” when making reference to the Hamas assault.

On Tuesday night, 234 Home members voted to censure the Michigan congresswoman, whereas 188 voted in opposition to the decision.

Earlier than the Home vote, a defiant Tlaib took to the Home flooring to talk out in opposition to her colleagues in assist of the censure.

On Wednesday, activist Tamika Mallory, a distinguished determine within the 2020 Black Lives Matter motion, took to social media to blast each Reps. Torres and Wilson, who’re Black.

Mallory referred to as Torres “horrible,” stating, “We want a candidate to run in opposition to him ASAP. I’ll work night time and day to vote him out of workplace.”

She then wrote, “Frederica Wilson, a Black girl from Florida, who has turned to the neighborhood for assist when she was being attacked, say it ain’t so.”

Rep. Cori Bush, additionally a member of “The Squad,” condemned her Democratic colleagues on X, previously Twitter, for voting to censure Tlaib.

Congressman Mfume stated that whereas members of Congress who voted in favor of the censure “retain the appropriate to vote how they need,” the voting public additionally has a proper to “problem any member of the Home or the Senate…if they’re voting in a approach that they don’t like.”
