Black Churches Land $8.5M In Grants To Preserve Historic Legacy

Historic Black church buildings have been labeled because the cornerstones of communities for hundreds of years….

Thirty traditionally Black church buildings of various denominations had been named recipients of $8.5 million in grants from the Nationwide Belief for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Motion Fund to protect historic African American websites, in keeping with a press launch despatched to BLACK ENTERPRISE. 

As a part of the third annual Preserving Black Church buildings (PBC) grant program, 30 church buildings nationwide will probably be added to a $60 million initiative that offers church management and its congregation funding to guard their legacies and historic context with monetary and technical experience. With the 2025 grants ranging between $50,000 and $500,000, named these worship areas will have the ability to handle essential preservation points like threats of demolition, wanted upkeep which will have been pushed apart, and extra, along with giving assets to intensify stewardship plans, improve asset administration, and enhance fundraising.

Supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., the 2025 recipients embody St.Paul United AME Church and the Historic Bethel Baptist Church Group in Birmingham, Alabama; Boynton United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas; the A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, and others. 

Soapstone Baptist Church in Pickens County, South Carolina, additionally obtained $250,000 in grants from this system. The positioning grounds embody a church, one-room faculty, slave cemetery, and rock outcrops utilized by the Cherokee nation for hundreds of years for cooking. 

Along with the Soapstone Preservation Endowment (SPE), funding from PBC will assist defend what leaders name a “particular place in South Carolina historical past.” After we started our work, few believed that we might ever obtain an audacious $1 million objective.
