Black Businesses In DC Push Back Against DEI Rollbacks

Black DMV residents are taking again their shopping for energy in response to mega-retailers scaling again DEI efforts,

Black-owned companies within the DMV space are pushing again in opposition to mega-retailers which have scaled again range, fairness, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Locals are turning to DEI Watch, a newly launched web site by Alexandria, Virginia-based entrepreneur DeShuna Spencer. The web site tracks company accountability on DEI initiatives and helps shoppers make knowledgeable selections about which manufacturers to help or boycott. Spencer, the founding father of the Black storytelling streaming platform KweliTV, launched DEI Watch to advertise transparency round companies’ stances on inclusion efforts and empower shoppers to make knowledgeable buying selections.

Spencer isn’t calling for boycotts of sure companies, “however if you wish to, we needed to create a platform that’s as correct as doable,” she informed Axios.

The location gives hyperlinks to firm pages or information sources, categorizing retailers into three teams: “dismantled” for corporations which have scaled again DEI efforts, “dedicated” for these sustaining energetic DEI initiatives, and “funded” for companies which have made important donations supporting Donald Trump’s return to the White Home.

Whereas some corporations scaling again DEI efforts made nationwide headlines, Spencer expressed shock upon discovering that others quietly discontinued their initiatives, such because the German low cost grocery store chain Aldi, typically present in lower-income neighborhoods.

Different initiatives by Black enterprise house owners within the DMV space embody tech entrepreneur Ayanna Smith’s Rejoice! DC platform, which highlights native neighborhoods and small companies. In honor of Black Historical past Month, Smith is looking on the neighborhood to help Black-owned companies by sharing them on social media and utilizing platforms like Official Black Wall Avenue, Naspora – WeBuyBlack, and Black-Owned Enterprise Directories to find and help these manufacturers.

“In D.C., we take as a right that we are able to discover a Black lawyer, physician or enterprise,” Smith mentioned.

“It may be difficult in different areas. … That’s why we’re pushing this intentionality initiative to make habits of shopping for Black and supporting our personal communities.”
