Black Author Tells Her Late Mother’s Story in Powerful First-Person Narrative Book

Highly effective first-person narrative chronicles the life and journey of an African American girl and her American Dream

Nationwide — Rosalind “Bee” Harris has introduced the discharge of The Story of Ruth in honor of her mom’s passing 15 years in the past in November 2008. Within the guide, which was printed on Mom’s Day this 12 months, she shares the inspiring story of her mom, Ruth Juanita Smith James Boyd, utilizing her mom’s personal phrases on this distinctive first-person narrative. “I wrote this guide to memorialize her life,” says Harris, who discovered of her mom’s sudden demise on the night of the election of Barack Obama in 2008. “Dropping my mom was devastating. My coronary heart sank with ache. It was the start of my soul’s search, which brings me so far of honoring and remembering her.”

“I take into consideration my mom daily, and I really feel her spirit round me,” Harris says. “Penning this guide and expressing my love for her has been soothing to my soul.”

Harris is the writer of the award-winning Denver City Spectrum, a neighborhood publication that has been spreading the information about folks of shade since 1987 and is acknowledged because the documenting supply for accuracy in information and knowledge.

“The telling of this story provides voice to the insightful historic saga of a Black household at a time when many now search to silence such voices,” says former Denver City Spectrum editor, contributor, and good friend, James Michael Brodie, who served as editor for this challenge.

“Roughly half of the states on this nation have entertained measures to erase the educating of Black historical past,” says Brodie. “Ruth Smith bore witness to the humanity of these she liked. If ever there was a time to inform our tales, now could be that point.”
