One Black girl’s look on “Wheel of Fortune” shortly grew to become a recreation of “Black card revoked” when a clip resurfaced on social media.  This week, Jemele Hill gave customers a superb snort when she reposted a clip of Shaneese Townsend’s look on the sport present in 2024, the place the contestant missed what to many Black individuals was a really apparent reply. Staring on the board, she confidently guessed “Berry Washington” as a substitute of, you guessed it, actress Kerry Washington.

The second sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Along with Hill, who sighed in “negro disapproval,” social media customers flooded the journalist’s remark part.

“Now who the hell is Berry Washington 😭 … the one Berry ‘we’ know is Gordy,” one person wrote.

One other added: ”Slowly yanking her card from her grips now…”

After additionally receiving shocked and disillusioned reactions from stars like Pleasure Reid, David Alan Grier, Questlove, and extra, Townsend messaged Hill to share a shocking clarification for her viral second, and arguably defend her Black card.

“Ms Hill. Thanks for posting my Wheel of Fortune episode. My persons are consuming me up within the feedback,” the previous Wheel of Fortune contestant wrote. “They’ve revoked my black card. Berry Washington was a black man lynched within the South for killing a white man that really attacked two younger women a few years in the past. A lot respect to Kerry Washington. I don’t watch a lot TV, however I learn many books.”

Townsend’s response shortly silenced social media customers who tried to revoke her Black card for not understanding a cultural reality like Kerry Washington. For a lot of, her response felt like an Uno reverse and a draw for multi function (if you understand, you understand).

“Oh so she has a titanium black card and we simply primary members. Acquired it,” actress Amber Riley commented beneath a follow-up publish of her response.

One other person jokingly wrote: “Slowly handing the cardboard I snatched again in embarrassment 🤦🏾‍♂️ ‘right here ya go, I don’t know what came visiting me to run off together with your card like that.’”

Townsend was certainly referring to 72-year-old Berry Washington, who was lynched on Could 26, 1919, in Milan, Georgia, for safeguarding two younger Black women from being assaulted by John Dowdy and Lewis Evans, two white males. Experiences say that Dowdy and Evans entered the Black neighborhood in Milan round 1 a.m. and attacked the lady’s house. Washington, who lived close by, heard the commotion and stepped exterior together with his firearm. When Dowdy fired at Washington, the 72-year-old shot again, finally killing Dowdy. Regardless of it being an act of self-defense, Washington was taken into custody and finally hanged in the identical place the place he shot Dowdy.

The tragic story is only one of hundreds of racist lynchings that scarred that period. And now, because of Townsend, Black individuals on social media will always remember the title Berry Washington (or Kerry Washington).
