Ava DuVernay & Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Talk Filming ‘Origin’

*Author and director Ava DuVernay has masterfully created one other movie, “Origin,” starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor that can pull at your feelings whereas delivering transformative info.

DuVernay’s “Origin“ tells the story of writer Isabel Wilkerson and her journey of writing her New York Instances bestseller Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.  

Wilkerson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist and writer. Through the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case, she was approached by an previous editor requesting her to write down a bit concerning the occasions.

Wilkerson was hesitant to take action and felt the state of affairs introduced extra questions than solutions, which led her to analysis the origins of race and racism on this nation. Whereas attempting to make sense of this concept she found what a caste system was and the way that system is extra of what we take care of as a society.

We spoke with DuVerney about how she creates a movie with heavy material whereas nonetheless making the fabric partaking.

“There’s no magic to it. I simply get in there and do the work and determine it out,” stated DuVernay. “I’m simply attempting to do my finest on the web page.”

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor spoke about what it was like enjoying Wilkerson.

“What was clear for me in how we executed it…primarily she went by way of this grief in a brief period of time. I imagine grief primarily propelled that search [and the research for Wilkerson’s book].

Ellis-Taylor added: And grief which expressed itself in this type of memorialization to her mom, her cousin, and Bret. It was love,” stated Ellis-Taylor.  

She went on so as to add how by way of Wilkerson’s grief, her love for her household was on the root of all the things – and love helped her by way of.

“Origin“ is in theaters beginning January 19.
