The New York Amsterdam Information’ reporting on the underreported impacts of gun violence is being celebrated with the announcement of the Newswomen’s Membership of New York winners this week.
Investigative reporter Shannon Chaffers has received the “new journalist” award for her reporting on the distinctive challenges that gun violence survivors face with returning to work. Her tales are featured within the four-part sequence, Hidden Prices: The Monetary Toll of Gun Violence, part of the Amsterdam Information’ multi-year venture, Past the Barrel of the Gun.
“I’m tremendously enthusiastic about this recognition of Shannon’s wonderful work by the Newswomen’s Membership of New York,” stated Damaso Reyes, government editor of the Amsterdam Information and founding editor of the newspaper’s investigative unit, The Blacklight. “She’s a gifted younger journalist and we’re fortunate to have her on our Blacklight workforce.”
The 102-year-old journalism group’s Entrance Web page Award winners embrace reporters at The New York Occasions, The Wall Road Journal, NBC Information, amongst others. The longtime girls’s journalism group gives coaching and networking alternatives for ladies journalists reporting in New York Metropolis.
“Shannon’s work is a superb instance of the mission of the Amsterdam Information’ reporting this 12 months, and a few years earlier than: to dig deeper into points that matter to our communities and present the true penalties of our present programs,” stated Amsterdam Information Writer Elinor Tatum, who in November grew to become the primary Black girl to win Editor & Writer Writer of the 12 months award. Chaffers’s award is among the many 30 awards the New York Amsterdam Information received in 2024 for its distinctive journalism.
The Newswomen’s Membership of New York has a longstanding historical past of honoring investigative journalists for the reason that award started in 1937. Some of the outstanding members of the membership was investigative journalist Nellie Bly, who produced investigative tales on girls manufacturing unit employees and, most famously, undercover within the girls’s asylum on Blackwell’s Island.
