Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrates founders’ day on MLK Day

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. had a duel celebration on Monday. January 15 is the primary intercollegiate traditionally African American sorority’s 116th founders’ day, which falls on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this 12 months.

The sorority was based in 1908 on the campus of Howard College.

Members throughout the nation spent the big day celebrating the group’s legacy whereas on the identical time taking part of their annual MLK Day of Service Tasks.

The exercise is in honor of King, who was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the oldest intercollegiate traditionally African American fraternity. His spouse, Coretta Scott King, was an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Chapters of the sorority joined collectively to volunteer and serve the neighborhood. Domestically, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Tau Omega Chapter in Harlem volunteered on the Canaan Senior Heart the place they distributed toiletries and clothes.

In Brooklyn, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Delta Rho Omega Chapter participated in a service venture at Cornerstone Baptist Church by supporting the church’s meals pantry.

Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha in Queens partnered with the Jap Queens Alliance (EQA) for the revealing of two benches for the EQA Group Peace Backyard. The organizations additionally led an interactive dialogue about King and took part in a neighborhood clean-up initiative.

The Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha within the Bronx held their MLK Day of Service occasion final Friday with at Barrio BX Restaurant the place members participated in coat drive and karaoke night time. The chapter took accepted coats, hats and scarves that will probably be donated to a migrant shelter within the Bronx.

On Sunday, Members of the sorority’s Alpha Beta Pi Omega Chapter in Staten Island held a neighborhood meals giveaway.
