Algeria condemns Israel for supporting Morocco over Sahara region

Algeria on Thursday 20 July 2023 denounced Israel’s backing of Morocco’s “claimed sovereignty” over the disputed Western Sahara area as a “flagrant violation” of worldwide regulation.

The Western Sahara battle pits Morocco towards Sahrawi separatists of the Algiers-backed Polisario Entrance. The dispute dates again to 1975, when colonial ruler Spain withdrew from the territory, sparking a 15-year conflict between Morocco and the Polisario, which sought the territory’s independence.

On Monday, the royal cupboard in Rabat mentioned Israel had determined to “recognise Morocco’s sovereignty” over the mineral-rich desert area, citing a letter from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The choice “constitutes a flagrant violation of worldwide regulation, UN Safety Council choices and Common Meeting resolutions on the Western Sahara query”, the international ministry in Algiers mentioned in an announcement.

Any settlement with Morocco?

It “exhibits settlement between the occupiers’ insurance policies and their complicity in violating worldwide regulation” and encroaches upon the “authentic proper of the Palestinian individuals to determine their unbiased state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital and of the Sahrawi individuals to self-determination”.

Rabat controls almost 80 per cent of Western Sahara and sees your entire area, house to considerable phosphates and fisheries, as its sovereign territory. The Polisario continues to demand a UN-supervised referendum on self-determination, which was agreed in a 1991 ceasefire accord however has nonetheless not taken place.

Israel’s determination slammed

On Wednesday, the Polisario slammed Israel’s determination as “null and void” and mentioned it might “solely reinforce the willpower of the Sahrawi individuals to pursue their nationwide wrestle on a number of fronts”.

Algeria and Morocco have had no diplomatic ties since 2021 after months of tensions and after Morocco normalised relations with Israel as a part of a collection of US-backed offers with Arab states referred to as the Abraham Accords.
