On Aug. 21, 2022, seven Adams County, Ohio, sheriff’s deputies raided the house of Grammy-nominated rapper and parody artist Afroman whereas investigating allegations tied to medicine and attainable kidnapping. The deputies discovered nothing and their raid resulted in no costs being filed in opposition to their suspect. Afroman, nevertheless, did discover one thing on account of that raid:

Comedy gold.

The seven deputies filed a defamation lawsuit in opposition to Afroman, born Joseph Edgar Foreman, claiming parody songs and movies he recorded utilizing residence surveillance footage of the raid brought on them and their relations to be publicly ridiculed and harassed. On Wednesday, after a three-day trial, the courtroom sided with Foreman, which he thought-about a win for “free speech” and “America” simply as a lot because it was a win for himself.

Earlier than the raid, the parody movies and the next lawsuits, Afroman was most identified for his 2000 hit “As a result of I Bought Excessive.” After the raid, nevertheless, he grew to become an web sensation yet again with songs like “Lemon Pound Cake” and “Will You Assist Me Restore My Door,” which have been the songs the deputies sued over, collectively, in search of almost $4 million in damages, as a result of he actually harm their little Karen-cop emotions.

From the Related Press:

The Adams County deputies mentioned they have been publicly harassed over the viral movies, which have been considered greater than 3 million instances on YouTube. The movies present rifle-wielding deputies busting down Afroman’s door, looking his sneakers and swimsuit pockets, and hungrily eyeing a cake on the kitchen desk, inspiring one tune’s title, “Lemon Pound Cake.”

In different music movies, Afroman took intention on the deputies’ private lives and referred to as them “crooked cops” due to $400 that went lacking within the raid.

“Cops shouldn’t be stealing civilians’ cash,” the rapper testified this week. “This entire factor is an outrage.”

In courtroom — carrying a pink, white and blue American flag swimsuit — he defended his work on First Modification grounds and mentioned he issued the diss tracks to cowl damages from the raid, together with a damaged gate and entrance door.

“The entire raid was a mistake. All of that is their fault. In the event that they hadn’t have wrongly raided my home, there could be no lawsuit. I’d not know their names,” mentioned Foreman, who testified that the ordeal traumatized his kids, who have been 12 and 10 on the time. “They wouldn’t be on my residence surveillance system, and there could be no songs, nothing.”

Foreman’s lawyer, David Osborne, mentioned in closing arguments that “no affordable individual would count on a police officer to not be criticized,” and that “they’ve been referred to as names earlier than.” He additionally famous that “it was commonplace for artists engaged in social commentary to magnify,” AP reported.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs, Robert Klingler, took exception to that declare, saying “these seven courageous deputy sheriffs” suffered as Foreman informed lies about them for the final three years.

“Even when someone does one thing to you that hurts you, that you simply suppose is flawed — like a search warrant execution that you simply suppose is unfair … that doesn’t justify telling intentional lies designed to harm folks,” he argued.

One of many plaintiffs, Sgt. Randy Walters, testified that his little one had been hazed at college over the Afroman movies and got here residence crying.

“The place on the planet is it OK to make one thing up for enjoyable that’s damaging to others when you recognize for certain it’s an absolute lie?” Walters requested.

Have been they lies, although?

If any of these deputies had somebody tear via their residence, in search of medicine, proof of a kidnapping, or no matter, they usually seen they have been quick $400 after the raid, would they not assume it was the state-sanctioned residence invaders who have been accountable? Would they not be loud about that allegation? I suppose that facet of the swimsuit might have been argued. Perhaps Afroman was mendacity in regards to the $400. Perhaps he misplaced it. Perhaps the deputies by no means touched it. Perhaps it’s a “he mentioned, they mentioned” form of a scenario that may’t be confirmed or disproven.

However what about the remainder? How is it defamation when there’s very actual video footage of the very actual raid offered within the very factor deputies have been suing over?

Have been they defamed, or have been they simply embarrassed as a result of they didn’t assume a man who makes comedy movies and songs for a dwelling would have a house surveillance system that would supply him with contemporary materials?

Additionally, simply as an apart, right here’s one deputy who appeared to suppose his spouse, whom he’s been with since center college, might or will not be dishonest on him with Afroman, as a result of, apparently, Foreman indicated that she did, which the deputy says is a lie, though he doesn’t appear fairly certain about that.

Nah, that’s fairly hilarious.

Anyway, as one other apart, there’s been loads of hypothesis that Afroman is definitely an Afro-MAGA Trump supporter, which largely appears to stem from a tune he did aimed toward President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who, in 2024, was convicted on three felony counts associated to him buying a firearm in 2018 whereas allegedly hooked on medicine.

Or as Foreman put it, “Hunter Bought Excessive.”

In 2024, he informed Newsweek that he hopes to carry out the Biden-ized model of “As a result of I Bought Excessive” at Trump rallies within the run-up to the election — which President Donald Trump received, after all — hoping the observe might reignite his profession.

“I’d actually be again,” he mentioned. “This one would possibly take me to the stratosphere. I could be singing it at some Trump rallies.”

Now, what Foreman informed the outlet made it sound as if he was extra all for his personal fame than in supporting the present president. Newsweek additionally famous that “whereas he mentioned that is essentially the most political tune he’s ever carried out, he additionally mentioned he received’t stray from poking enjoyable at each side of the aisle.”

“If I had some good strains, I’d use them. I’d give them to the Earth. I’d sing about anyone. I sang in regards to the police who raided me,” Foreman mentioned.

Foreman additionally mentioned this, concerning considerations that Biden would possibly sue him as these deputies did a 12 months later:

“He could also be larger than my tune, but when he does sue, so long as he doesn’t take all the cash, he can have some, as a result of he impressed the tune.”

It might be hilarious if Afroman acquired excessive and forgot he despatched Hunter Biden $400. Jussayin’.
