African American women honored on U.S. quarters

For the final 4 years, the U.S. Mint issued 5 new quarters every year with an American girl on the reverse aspect.

Former Rep. Barbara Lee, (D-Calif.-12), launched the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Regulation 116-330), which handed in January 2021 and in the end paved the best way for the creation of those new cash beneath The American Girls Quarters Program™.

The American Girls Quarters Program™ celebrates the accomplishments and contributions made by girls to the event and historical past of our nation. Starting in 2022, and persevering with via 2024, the U.S. Mint issued 5 new reverse designs every year. 5 quarters will probably be issued in 2025 beneath this program.

The American Girls Quarters characteristic contributions from girls in quite a lot of fields, together with, however not restricted to suffrage, civil rights, abolition, authorities, humanities, science, house and the humanities. The ladies honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically various backgrounds.

Maya Angelou was a celebrated author, performer and social activist. She was acclaimed as one among America’s most seen Black girls. Angelou had a broad profession as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood’s first feminine Black director, however grew to become well-known as a author, editor, essayist, playwright and poet.

Bessie Coleman was the primary African American and first Native American girl pilot. She was the primary African American to earn a world pilot’s license. She traveled to Le Crotoy, France, in 1920 to attend an aviation college. She was the one scholar of colour in her class.

The Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray was the primary Black girl to graduate from Yale Regulation College with a health care provider of juridical science diploma in 1965. A real trailblazer, Pauli Murray was a scholar, activist, author and Episcopal priest who was an vital but usually neglected determine within the civil and ladies’s rights actions.

Ida B. Wells was an educator, journalist, suffragist and civil rights activist. She fought for justice and equality and used her highly effective voice to show violence towards African Individuals within the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She co-founded the Nationwide Affiliation for the Development of Coloured Individuals (NAACP).
