On SCOTUS Affirmative Motion Ruling: “The Supreme Courtroom majority’s ruling is a shameful step backwards for equality, training, and the pursuit of prosperity for Black college students specifically. This end result reaffirms the significance of instructing and understanding Black historical past, quite than ignore it, as the bulk justices are eager to do.

The choice to reject Affirmative Motion reaffirms the boundaries of systemic racism, and denies a long time of hard-earned progress within the combat for instructional fairness. Whereas that combat was dealt a blow, we on the AFRO stay decided to advocate for Black voices within the classroom and past.”

On NAACP’s press convention & lack of transparency w/ Police Commissioner: “The Mayor’s course of for appointing Baltimore’s new police commissioner has been neither clear nor democratic. Whereas the police commissioner serves on the pleasure of the Mayor, the Mayor serves on the pleasure of the individuals, and the individuals deserve transparency.

Our new commissioner might certainly come from inside the Baltimore Police Division or elsewhere, however our group is owed entry to a good and open course of. We on the AFRO echo the calls from Baltimore’s NAACP chapter, and our metropolis’s civil rights companions.”

On pupil mortgage ruling: “As soon as once more, the Supreme Courtroom majority has dominated towards the pursuits of Black Individuals. Our group is disproportionately impacted by pupil debt, with Black graduates holding $25,000 greater than White graduates, and a median stability of over $52,000 nationwide. Additional, our state of Maryland, which is 29 p.c Black, has the very best common pupil mortgage debt per borrower, exceeding $42,000.

By discarding $400 billion in reduction, the courtroom’s determination will add to the undue burden Black college students face in pursuit of upper training and financial alternative.

The work to attain instructional and financial justice should proceed, irrespective of how the efforts to disclaim our freedoms.”
