By Frances “Toni” Draper, AFRO CEO and Writer

When my grandfather, Carl J. Murphy, Ph. D., wrote of World Struggle II as “our struggle,” it was an acknowledgement of how close to the worldwide battle was to the Black group. This e book was initially revealed in 1945, simply months after the Allied victory, when the ripple results had solely begun to unfold throughout the globe. The evils of facism had been dealt a forceful, however not deadly blow, as we might later come to study. Troopers re-entered a rustic in search of to construct upon their shared victory, with the civil rights motion nonetheless in its earlier days.

Nonetheless right now, as we mark 75 years of a desegregation in the US Armed Forces, these ripple results could be felt.

As lawmakers throughout the US try to reduce and rewrite Black historical past, hatred fuels this erasure of frequent goal and information. Amid these efforts, it turns into ever extra essential for us to doc and share our personal tales. “This Is Our Struggle” does simply that by highlighting the triumphs and challenges Black troopers confronted each overseas and at residence in their very own phrases. Our models delivered a forceful blow in opposition to the unfold of evil overseas, however each day life in America—then and now— reminds us how a lot work stays within the battle in opposition to injustice.

In the course of the struggle, many African-American troopers lamented about fairer remedy overseas in comparison with what they confronted again in the US. Their plight is ceaselessly recorded into historical past due to the AFRO-American Newspapers’ expansive archival assortment, which placed on report their day-to-day life within the navy in addition to their main conquests on the struggle entrance. The “Double V” marketing campaign — “Victory Overseas and Victory at Residence” — emerged from this conundrum as Black troopers discovered themselves combating two simultaneous wars for freedom and democracy. Many hoped that their patriotic service overseas would result in higher remedy upon their return residence, however sadly, they had been mistaken.

The struggle continued for Black troopers once they returned residence from international battle, and this struggle nonetheless rages right now. “That is Our Struggle” not solely preserves our historical past, however lives on as a testomony to the continuing pursuit of justice.

The reality issues. Courageous, high quality storytelling and correct journalism issues.

The storytelling and braveness of the Black Press amplified the extraordinary efforts of Black troopers and models throughout the war-front. The AFRO was proud to play a pivotal function in these efforts, sending correspondents worldwide to Europe, Africa, Alaska and into the South Pacific.

Our writers documented varied essential inflection factors within the struggle, from the chasing of Rommel out of Northern Africa to landfall in Normandy, and lots of others.

Within the e book, we spotlight the efforts of particular person correspondents like Elizabeth “Bettye” Phillips, the primary Black girl journalist to be despatched abroad as a struggle correspondent.

We additionally salute the tireless efforts of the 6888th Central Postal Listing Battalion, a predominantly Black battalion of the Ladies’s Military Corps, who sorted, re-routed, and delivered mail to greater than seven million Individuals and Allied troops stationed within the European Theater. The AFRO, as Col. (Rret.) Edna Cummings factors out in her reflection, highlighted the service of those ladies and was a supply of knowledge as she and others efficiently fought for a Congressional Gold Medal celebrating these brave troopers.

This month, we rejoice Veterans Day and honor those that labored tirelessly to desegregate the U.S. navy greater than seven many years in the past. We’re proud to current a reprint of the AFRO e book “That is Our Struggle,” now obtainable for $19.95, plus tax and delivery. The e book, reprinted by Black Traditional Press, is now obtainable upon request by calling 410-554-8200 or emailing customerservice@afro.com.

This assortment of letters and pictures, culled from the AFRO-American Newspapers’ Archives, captures the tales of Black service members and a lot extra. In the present day we proceed to attempt for our objective of recording Black life and the accomplishments of African Individuals– each well-known and lesser-known.

This Veterans Day we acknowledge Black service members for his or her service, however we additionally uplift the members of the Black Press, who recorded the battles for Black freedom— each at residence and overseas throughout— World Struggle II. That is nonetheless our struggle, and we’ll proceed to battle on.
