MacKenzie Scott donates $50 million to Winston-Salem State University

MacKenzie Scott’s giving spree continues, and Winston-Salem State College is the newest beneficiary. This week, the North Carolina HBCU introduced a transformational $50 million present from Scott. 

This marks the philanthropist’s second present to WSSU, surpassing her preliminary donation of $30 million in 2020. Making her complete monetary contribution to the college $80 million, Scott’s donations are a number of the largest single present within the college’s 133-year historical past.

“This present is really life-changing for our college students and our neighborhood,” mentioned WSSU Chancellor Bonita J. Brown in a press launch. “MacKenzie Scott’s confidence in Winston-Salem State College permits us to remodel lives, not simply immediately, however for generations.”

In 2020, Scott’s present was invested into WSSU’s endowment, permitting the college to boost scholar entry, gasoline scholarship alternatives, and strengthen its long-term monetary sustainability. The remaining funds had been used to develop WSSU’s actual property footprint, an important step for a land-locked campus experiencing file demand. 

Now, the HBCU’s management is actively growing a plan to allocate Scott’s unrestricted $50 million donation in a manner that prioritizes scholar success and creates a long-lasting impression.

WSSU is the newest college to obtain unrestricted monetary assist from Scott. This yr alone, she’s given $70 million to the United Negro School Fund (UNCF), $42 million to Alcorn State College,  $63 million to Morgan State College, $50 million to Virginia State College, $38 million to Alabama State College, $80 million to Howward College and $38 million to Spelman School, amongst others. She gifted $50 million to Norfolk State College the identical day because the present to WSSU.
