Solange Knowles launches Saint Heron Library to archive rare and out-of-print books by Black authors

When you’re on the hunt for a uncommon, out-of-print title by a Black creator, Solange Knowles has bought your again.

On Thursday, September 25, the 39-year-old singer and multidisciplinary artist introduced she was launching the Saint Heron Library in an Instagram put up.

“The [Saint Heron] digital archive library half I. Liiiive at the moment,” she wrote within the caption of a put up on Instagram. “The Saint Heron Library is house to our archival assortment of primarily uncommon, out of print, and 1st version titles by Black [and] brown authors, poets, [and] artists.”

Knowles, a Grammy-winning artist and artistic drive, based Saint Heron as a multidisciplinary cultural hub devoted to celebrating and preserving Black and brown artistry. The Saint Heron Library extends that mission, providing readers free entry to literary works which may in any other case stay inaccessible. By digitizing and archiving these texts, the venture seeks to guard cultural legacies whereas making certain they proceed to encourage future generations.

This isn’t the primary time Knowles has launched a library via Saint Heron. The Saint Heron Digital Archive Library operates on a free, honor-based borrowing system, based on the location’s phrases. Open solely to U.S. residents, every borrower could reserve one e book at a time, with requests fulfilled on a first-come, first-served foundation. Books are shipped instantly with complimentary transport and return postage, and should be returned inside 45 days. Misplaced or broken books are topic to market-value expenses, making certain the sustainability of the archive whereas holding it free for readers.
