African American Day Parade highlighting Black education

The 56th Annual African American Day Parade (AADP) will happen on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 12:30 to six p.m. alongside Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard in Harlem.

This 12 months’s theme, “Training is Our #1 Precedence,” will probably be mirrored in floats, marching bands, group organizations, civil servants, efficiency teams, elected officers, fraternities and sororities, unions, celebrities, and nationwide figures.

“With the passing of Congressman Charles Rangel; Hazel Dukes, president of the NAACP New York State Convention; Lloyd Williams, president and CEO of the Higher Harlem Chamber of Commerce and co-founder of Harlem Week; and Tamara Norman, vice chair emeritus of the African American Day Parade, we salute them for his or her unwavering help of schooling and dedication to our group. They are going to be actually missed,” mentioned Yusuf Hasan, chairman of the African American Day Parade, Inc. “One of many targets of the parade is to uplift the group’s spirits as we transfer ahead.”

The AADP celebration spans two days, starting on Saturday, Sept. 20, with the third Annual Get Concerned: Group, Literacy, Well being, and Tradition Celebration from 11 a.m. to five p.m. at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Plaza. The occasion will characteristic dwell performances, literacy actions, giveaways, prizes, a well being panel, and on-site well being companies.

On Sunday, the parade will honor this 12 months’s grand marshals, together with leaders of traditionally Black schools and universities (HBCUs): Dr. Tony Allen, president of Delaware State College; Dr. Martin Lamelle Jr., president of Grambling State College; and Dr. Patrice Ramsey, president of Medgar Evers Faculty.

Further grand marshals embody Sandra Bookman, anchor of Eyewitness Information on ABC7/WABC-TV; WBLS 107.5 FM radio persona Dr. Bob Lee; Pleasure Bivins, director of the Schomburg Middle for Analysis in Black Tradition; and the founder and CEO of the Make the Grade Basis.

Native college principals will even function marshals: Dr. Shawn F. Brown, principal of Uniondale Excessive Faculty on Lengthy Island; Francina Yaw-Costello, principal of Amber Constitution Faculty in Inwood; and Jean E. Jeanty, principal of Pugsley Preparatory Academy Center Faculty within the Bronx.

For the second 12 months in a row, WABC-TV will companion with the AADP to livestream the parade on ABC7NY.com.
