Black Freedom Fund Aims For $200M Endowment

Launched in 2020 in response to the nationwide reckoning over racial injustice following the homicide of George Floyd, the California Black Freedom Fund—the biggest pooled fund within the nation devoted to Black-serving organizations—has introduced daring plans to increase right into a $200 million endowment, in accordance with the Related Press. 

Initially housed inside the Silicon Valley Neighborhood Basis, the fund formally spun off on July 1 and rebranded itself because the Black Freedom Fund to mirror its new, nationwide focus. Since its founding, the Black Freedom Fund has been a steadfast power in strengthening Black-led actions and establishments. The fund helps organizations working throughout sectors—from prison justice and healthcare to arts, tradition, and advocacy—making certain that funding reaches these in want and that options are created to bolster and uplift Black individuals nationwide.  

Notably, the fund spearheaded the Black LA Reduction & Restoration Fund, distributing $2.3 million in donations from each native and nationwide companions to help communities impacted by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County earlier this yr. Developed in partnership with the California Neighborhood Basis, the initiative was rooted in a community-led strategy to equitable catastrophe restoration.

Philpart famous that the fund’s mission isn’t just about responding to crises; it’s about constructing lasting infrastructure.

One of many fund’s flagship applications is the Authorized Schooling, Advocacy, and Protection (LEAD™) for Racial Justice Initiative, which affords professional bono authorized consulting and coaching for nonprofits.
