Newly launched National Association of Black Bookstores celebrates and preserves Black literary culture

Simply as wealthy historical past lies between the traces of iconic Black literature, a wealthy historical past lies within the Black-owned bookstores devoted to distributing the facility of literature to communities. This week, the Nationwide Affiliation of Black Bookstores (NAB2) formally launched, changing into the primary nationwide group of its type. 

Created to advertise literacy, amplify Black voices, and protect Black tradition by rising the visibility, sustainability, and affect of Black bookstores and booksellers, NAB2 strives to unify, elevate, and empower Black-owned bookstores nationwide. 

“For many years, Black bookstores have been the connective tissue in communities throughout the nation. Many people have talked for years in regards to the energy of collective motion,” Blanche Richardson, NAB2 founding board member and proprietor of Marcus Books, mentioned in a press launch. “Now, with the founding of NAB2, we’ve got the flexibility to institutionalize insurance policies and practices that can enable for the additional progress and flourishing of those necessary establishments.” 

The nonprofit collective is led by a board of among the nation’s most iconic Black bookstore house owners or descendants of the house owners of among the nation’s oldest working Black-owned ebook shops like Marshall’s Music and Books in Jackson, Mississippi, Hakim’s Bookstore in Philadelphia, PA, Marcus Books in Oakland, CA, and Supply Booksellers in Detroit, MI. 

“My mom, Mom Rose, based and ran Underground Books in Oak Park [Ca.]. My involvement within the Nationwide Affiliation of Black Bookstores is deeply private. It’s a manner for me to honor her legacy and be certain that the tales, voices, and areas she cherished proceed to thrive,” mentioned Kevin Johnson, the founding father of NAB2. 

The group facilities 5 priorities: 

Increasing illustration within the bookselling business by supporting long-term monetary sustainability and progress. 

Elevating the Black bookstore neighborhood by providing skilled assets, elevated visibility, and a powerful community of help;

Leveraging economies of scale to profit each present and future Black bookstores and booksellers;

Serving as a collective voice for Black bookstores via advocacy and public engagement;

Educating the general public in regards to the wealthy historical past and enduring legacy of Black bookstores in America.

Moreover, NAB2 will comply with a multi-tiered membership mannequin, inviting bookstore house owners, skilled booksellers, and at-large business allies, authors, publishers, and distributors to affix their nationwide agenda rooted in fairness, tradition, and commerce. The group’s full board of administrators, advisory board, and common membership physique will meet just about and in-person all year long, with plans to take part in key occasions like Black Lit Weekend in New York (August 15–16) and the Sacramento Black E-book Truthful (September 12–13).
