Morning Glory Homestead: Cultivating history, heritage and hospitality

What started as a method to educate their 5 kids about gardening and livestock has grown right into a vibrant farm, tenting and cultural vacation spot that preserves and celebrates Gullah heritage. Belinda and Anthony Jones moved to St. Helena Island, S.C., after Anthony’s retirement. They settled on 12 acres of household land that has been in Anthony’s household since 1868, through the Reconstruction period.

“We moved right here about 20 years in the past after Tony retired from the Military,” stated Belinda Jones. “We had our 5 kids with us… and we have been simply sharing issues with them that we realized rising up from our dad and mom and grandparents about gardening and animal husbandry.”

Belinda and Anthony Jones are increasing their farming enterprise to now embody a camp floor. The couple began small, educating their kids to lift chickens and develop greens and named the farm Morning Glory Homestead. They joined the 4-H program by means of Clemson Extension at Clemson College and created a membership that allowed their youngsters to take part in agriculture tasks, a few of which led to awards at native competitions and gross sales at farmers markets.

“Every of our children that participated, out of three, received prizes,” Belinda stated. “Our oldest sons topped out in first place in virtually each class.”

“We’re campers,” Belinda stated. “Our children grew up tent tenting and mountaineering and fishing… and we noticed how farms in Europe have been used as trip spots. We wished to recreate that right here.”
