For many years, Sonja Norwood has been a strong but usually underestimated drive behind among the most recognizable names in Black leisure — together with her kids, R&B singer Brandy and entrepreneur-artist Ray J.

However whereas the highlight has lengthy shone on her well-known offspring, Norwood’s story is certainly one of quiet willpower, religious grounding, and a refusal to be diminished by the labels that others place on her.

“I don’t just like the phrase ‘momager,’” Norwood stated candidly. “It’s a code phrase — a warning to executives {that a} mom is managing her baby, so it’s going to be troublesome. It’s dismissive, and it underestimates the data and dedication we carry to the desk.”

Norwood, who started her profession far outdoors the glitz of Hollywood — working for H&R Block and Dun & Bradstreet — didn’t got down to handle entertainers. However when her kids’s skills grew to become simple, she stepped in to guard their pursuits and information their careers.

Brandy’s breakout roles in “Moesha” and “Cinderella,” and Ray J’s multifaceted leisure ventures, from One on One to tech entrepreneurship, bear the fingerprints of Norwood’s early administration.

“The trade may be nasty,” she stated bluntly. “I didn’t know the terminology, the contracts, the video games individuals performed. However I grew to become a scholar of it. I discovered the whole lot I may to maintain my kids protected — professionally and personally.”

That twin accountability — as each mom and supervisor — got here with steep emotional prices.

“It was like carrying three hats,” she defined. “Typically it appeared to them that I cared extra concerning the enterprise than being a mother, particularly once they didn’t really feel like working or wished to be with pals. However I needed to remind them: ‘You selected this. These are your obligations.’”

Norwood insists that staying grounded — in religion, household, and neighborhood — was key to holding her kids from dropping themselves within the glare of fame.

“I by no means modified who I used to be,” she stated. “I stayed that lady from McComb, Mississippi and Carson, California. I made positive they stayed rooted of their morals, their perception in God, and who we’re as a household.”

That grounding included early neighborhood involvement. One pivotal second got here when Danny Bakewell, Sr., then–president and CEO and now board chairman of the Brotherhood Campaign, invited a younger Brandy to carry out on the Black Household Reunion.

“That modified the whole lot,” Norwood recalled. “She sang on the principle stage, and from there we began getting actual curiosity from producers and report labels. If it weren’t for that, we would not have entered the trade after we did.”

Norwood will quickly debut an everyday, yet-to-be-titled column within the Los Angeles Sentinel — one other impactful enterprise led by Bakewell, Sr., the paper’s government writer.

Drawing from many years of expertise navigating the leisure trade as a mom, supervisor, and mentor, the column will provide steerage, classes, and real-life reflections geared toward empowering mother and father, particularly ladies.

Even with that momentum, Norwood was usually met with skepticism and resistance — significantly as a Black lady commanding energy in negotiations.

“I used to be labeled ‘troublesome,’” she stated, “however that was simply because I knew learn a contract and wouldn’t let individuals benefit from us. If a person does that, he’s revered. However a lady — particularly a mom — will get labeled.”

At present, Norwood has largely stepped away from day-to-day administration. As an alternative, she performs an advisory position, particularly within the ventures of Ray J and her 23-year-old granddaughter, who can also be pursuing an leisure profession.

And now, she’s creating her personal area — launching a podcast and growing an academic course for aspiring mum or dad managers.

The podcast, titled “Beans On a regular basis,” is deeply private — and deeply symbolic.

“Earlier than I let somebody mistreat me or my youngsters, I’ll eat beans day-after-day,” she stated with conviction. “It’s about understanding your value. I don’t want luxurious or validation if it means compromising who I’m.”

Requested what recommendation she’d give to different mum or dad managers, Norwood emphasised preparation, humility, and unwavering love.

“You must know who you’re earlier than you step into the room. If not, you’ll get eaten alive,” she stated. “And also you’ve acquired to study to separate being a mum or dad from being a supervisor. That’s exhausting. However on the finish of the day, you’re nonetheless their mom. That by no means modifications.”

Norwood additionally made a degree to uplift the position of her husband, Willie Norwood Sr., of their kids’s growth. A vocal coach and producer, he educated each Brandy and Ray J vocally and remained a relentless presence all through their careers.

“I didn’t do that alone,” she stated. “He’s all the time been there, warming them up earlier than reveals, touring with them, mentoring them.”

Regardless of the challenges and criticism, Norwood has no regrets — solely classes.

“I by no means wished this life, however I used to be known as into it by my kids’s goals,” she stated. “And as soon as I used to be in it, I made positive I knew play the sport — and to play it properly. Not for fame, however for defense. For legacy.”

And for love — the sort solely a mom can provide.
