Eight opioid drug producers pays the District roughly $1.2 million as a part of a nationwide settlement resolving allegations that these corporations contributed to and exacerbated the nationwide opioid disaster, District of Columbia Lawyer Common Brian L. Schwalb introduced on Monday.

Beneath the phrases of the settlement, seven of the eight defendants — Alvogen, Amneal, Apotex, Hikima, Mylan, Solar, and Zydus — are prohibited from selling or advertising opioids and opioid merchandise; prohibited from making or promoting any product that incorporates greater than 40 mg of oxycodone per tablet; and are required to reform their company practices. The eighth defendant, Indivior, is prohibited from manufacturing or promoting any opioid merchandise for the following 10 years.

“We won’t cease till each company that illegally profited from the opioid disaster is held accountable,” Schwalb wrote on X, previously often called Twitter.

To this point, the Workplace of the Lawyer Common (OAG) mentioned it has secured practically $104 million from corporations that contributed to the opioid epidemic.

Mylan pays the District roughly $602,600, whereas Hikma will contribute about $188,800. Amneal is answerable for roughly $160,300, Apotex for $116,900, and Indivior for $71,100. Solar pays about $56,900, Alvogen roughly $34,300, and Zydus about $27,200.

In whole, these eight corporations pays $720 million to nearly each state and territory in the USA. Along with these funds, a number of of the settlements permit states to obtain free pharmaceutical merchandise or money as an alternative of the merchandise.

Whereas the District is ready to obtain about $1.2 million, Virginia — with greater than 8.8 million residents compared to D.C.’s greater than 700,000 — may obtain as much as $16.4 million as a part of these settlements.

“Although no settlement can erase the heartbreak and lives misplaced to the opioid disaster, I’m happy with my workplace for combating to safe over $16 million to assist Virginians heal, assist restoration, and maintain these corporations accountable for the devastation they profited from,” mentioned Virginia Lawyer Common Jason Miyares.

Schwalb mentioned that between 2021 and 2024, 1,740 individuals died from opioid overdoses within the District. He mentioned the settlement is the most recent growth in OAG’s persevering with efforts to handle the opioid disaster, maintain these answerable for it accountable, and safe reduction for affected D.C. residents. To this point, OAG reviews that it has secured practically $104 million for the District by way of settlements with drug producers, distributors, and others for his or her roles in creating and taking advantage of the disaster.

The District’s Opioid Abatement Advisory Fee was established in 2022 to make suggestions for easy methods to greatest use the anticipated $104 million in settlement funds to handle the hurt brought on by the opioid epidemic. After 5 years of rising annual opioid fatalities in D.C., opioid deaths fell in 2024, when there have been 344 opioid-related deadly overdoses, down from 516 the earlier 12 months. Within the first quarter of 2025, there have been 61 deadly opioid overdoses, a 33% lower year-to-date from the prior 12 months.

“Tragically, tons of of D.C. residents proceed to lose their lives yearly to opioid overdoses, and much too many members of our group battle with opioid habit,” Schwalb acknowledged. “This nationwide, bipartisan settlement holds corporations accountable for placing earnings over the well being and well-being of D.C. residents and requires significant modifications to their enterprise practices in order that this by no means occurs once more.”
