On Sunday, President Donald Trump did one thing no U.S. president has performed because the Civil Rights Motion: he used his govt powers to deploy the nationwide guard, overruling the authority of a state governor.

A whole bunch of California Nationwide Guard troops entered Los Angeles amid protests and tensions between the group and regulation enforcement over the Trump administration’s escalation of ICE raids and detainments. The choice rapidly drew condemnations from California management, together with Gov. Gavin Newsom, who vowed to sue the Trump administration.

“To me, that is simply fully pointless, and I feel it’s the [Trump] administration simply posturing…To me, that is simply political,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass advised LA’s KTLA TV station.

The previous U.S. congresswoman slammed the Trump White Home for upsetting “chaos” in Los Angeles, the place she mentioned demonstrators had a constitutional proper to peacefully protest.

Criticizing the raids that sparked mass protests on LA’s streets, Bass mentioned, “While you raid House Depot and workplaces, if you tear dad and mom and kids aside, and if you run armored caravans by means of our streets, you trigger worry and also you trigger panic. And deploying federalized troops is a harmful escalation.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris equally condemned the transfer by the White Home, calling it a “merciless, calculated agenda to unfold panic and division.”

“This administration’s actions are usually not about public security— they’re about stoking worry. Concern of a group demanding dignity and due course of,” mentioned Harris in a press release launched Sunday.

Protests intensify in Los Angeles after Trump deploys hundreds of National Guard troops

Defending demonstrators in Los Angeles, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee mentioned, “Protest is a robust software – important within the combat for justice. And because the LAPD mayor and governor have famous, demonstrations in protection of our immigrant neighbors have been overwhelmingly peaceable.”

She added, “I proceed to help the tens of millions of People who’re standing as much as shield our most basic rights and freedoms.”

The final time a president bypassed a governor to deploy the Nationwide Guard was in 1965 when President Lyndon B. Johnson despatched troops to Alabama to guard principally Black voting rights activists in the course of the Selma to Montgomery marches. Johnson determined to take action after then-Governor George Wallace, one of many nation’s most distinguished segregationists, refused to ship in troops to keep away from the notion that he was in help of protesters and their combat to finish racial discrimination within the state’s voting legal guidelines.

The NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights group, slammed President Trump’s resolution to ship federal troops to California.

“Deploying troops to communities already below strain will not be management—it’s provocation. The Trump Administration is weaponizing worry to divide and destabilize,” mentioned the group. “We is not going to be silent. We stand with these focused and terrorized. We combat for justice. All the time.”

The White Home introduced Saturday night time that the president was sending troops to help ICE and different federal regulation enforcement brokers.

“Within the wake of this violence, California’s feckless Democrat leaders have fully abdicated their accountability to guard their residents,” mentioned White Home press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “That’s the reason President Trump has signed a Presidential Memorandum deploying 2,000 Nationwide Guardsmen to deal with the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester.”

Musk says his money elected Trump. Where would things stand if Kamala Harris was president instead?

Mayor Bass recommended that the Trump administration didn’t give native regulation enforcement sufficient time or alternative to reply to mass protests, together with not giving authorities a heads-up concerning the controversial raids.

“I feel individuals ought to perceive that if the Chief doesn’t know when ICE goes to return to city, the place they will be and why, then you may’t come into city and count on the LAPD to amass a whole bunch of officers in a couple of minutes,” mentioned Bass.

The mayor, who mentioned she was in communication with Gov. Newsom and the Trump administration, emphasised, “Issues weren’t uncontrolled within the Metropolis of Los Angeles.”
