HBO Releases Trailer for “Surviving Ohio State” Documentary

A brand new HBO documentary is about to tug the curtain again on one of many darkest chapters in Ohio State College’s historical past.

Surviving Ohio State, produced by George Clooney and directed by Oscar and Emmy winner Eva Orner, premieres June seventeenth on HBO and can stream on Max. The challenge has been in growth for years and options interviews with a number of former Buckeye athletes who say they had been abused by Dr. Richard Strauss throughout his time as a college doctor from 1978 to 1998.

The trailer, which dropped June fifth, provides a preview of what’s to come back: firsthand accounts from survivors, together with former All-American wrestler and UFC champ Mark Coleman. The movie additionally options tales from Adam and Michael DiSabato, Will Knight, Al Novakowski, Rockey Ratliff, Dan Ritchie, and Mike Schyck; athletes whose names many within the OSU neighborhood will acknowledge.

Strauss died by suicide in 2005. By then, he had already confronted years of inside complaints that largely went ignored. Although the State Medical Board of Ohio opened an investigation in 1996, it stalled and was quietly closed in 2002 with none disciplinary motion. A deeper, public acknowledgement of the abuse didn’t start till 2018, when new complaints surfaced and the college launched an unbiased investigation. That uncovered abuse allegations from greater than 170 college students.

Whereas Ohio State was not concerned within the manufacturing, the college stays on the middle of the story. The documentary relies partly on a 2020 Sports activities Illustrated article by Jon Wertheim, who additionally serves as an govt producer.

The movie will premiere on the Tribeca Movie Competition in New York on Monday.
