About 5,000 miles separate New York Metropolis from Kwesi O. Kwarteng’s residence nation of Ghana, however his artistry in “Pleasant Paths,” the latest exhibit on the Plato Gallery within the Bowery, makes use of textile art work for example of the one thread that connects the 2 worlds.

“I simply need it to speak about my immigrant expertise,” Kwarteng stated to me the evening his exhibit opened. “Principally transferring right here from Ghana and assembly individuals from totally different cultures. On this work there are totally different materials from totally different cultures. I need totally different individuals to return in right here and see themselves in every bit.”

In “Pleasant Paths,” Kwarteng shuns goal varieties in his art work for multiculturalism. Whereas the viewer may make out landscapes, our bodies of water, roadways and skylines, the true viewing pleasure exists in what the compilation of supplies creates, not a lot within the creation itself. It’s a mirrored image of the storytelling concerned within the journey of immigration.

Kwarteng defined that every piece in “Pleasant Paths” took between a number of weeks and a number of other months to finish. A lot of the items seem as summary work on canvases, however a more in-depth look reveals the fabric weaved collectively to realize an identical expertise for the viewer. This distinctive type of textile expression has been in Kwarteng’s repertoire since he first started stitching kente fabric to a canvas greater than a decade in the past.

Earlier than the painstaking technique of dyeing every bit of material, many items of fabric had been collected from Kwarteng’s family and friends. It’s all in an effort to create a mosaic of tradition and expression. Coming from India, Japan, Indonesia and Ecuador, the material not solely represents totally different nations, however totally different cultures that went by means of the same motion of coming to America.

“Each immigrant comes right here and creates a household on their means, on their path to America by means of this multicultural society,” stated Kwarteng. “That’s how we create a pleasant path alongside the way in which.”

Except for material, what Kwarteng does to set him other than many different textile artists is permit every work to thrive its personal singularity whereas additionally serving as a voice within the choir of his exhibition. Whereas Oxford Languages defines immigration as “the act of coming to dwell completely in another country,” there’s myriad experiences that exist inside that journey. The anatomy of every piece can captivate the viewer with each sew and sample, however nothing compares to overhearing the cultural dialog had by all the works in tandem. Every canvas displaying a path from a distant future to an uncharted and unsure future.

“Pleasant Paths” by Kwesi O. Kwarteng will likely be on show at Plato gallery till Could 11. For more information, go to kwesiokwarteng.com and platogallery.com.
