Democrats say Trump’s tariffs could harm medical supply chains, warn people could die

Democrats are persevering with to sound the alarm about President Donald Trump’s retaliatory world tariffs, warning Trump administration officers that they are going to severely affect the medical provide chain business and probably price lives.

In a letter to U.S. Commerce Consultant Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, 26 Democrats within the Home of Representatives stated the tariffs, which have already sparked a commerce conflict with ally and adversary international locations alike, are “reckless” and may have “devastating penalties” for People who depend on medical provide, together with medicine and different merchandise.

“The availability disruptions of essential medical merchandise will unavoidably harm U.S. sufferers, power suppliers to make unattainable rationing choices, and probably even lead to dying as remedies are delayed, or simpler medicines and merchandise are swapped for much less efficient options,” the lawmakers wrote within the letter, in keeping with The Hill.

The letter was drafted and delivered earlier than Trump stated on Tuesday evening that he would quickly announce further tariffs on prescription drugs. He instructed Republicans at a Nationwide Republican Congressional Marketing campaign fundraising dinner, “As soon as we try this, they’re going to return speeding again into our nation as a result of we’re the massive market,” referring to pharmaceutical corporations.

The greater than two dozen Democrats stated within the letter that Trump’s tariffs will solely “backfire” on those that depend on sure medical merchandise. They urged Greer and Secretary Lutnick to contemplate tariff exemptions or product waivers on “energetic pharmaceutical substances, generic medicine, important medicines and significant medical provides,” reviews The Hill.

U.S. Rep. Alma Adams, D-N.C., instructed theGrio that she is anxious that President Trump’s tariffs may have an outsized affect on Black, brown, and different weak populations.

“For these of us who don’t have the identical form of earnings and the sources…it’s going to affect us vastly,” stated the longtime congresswoman.

“The president says, ‘Oh, short-term ache.” Nicely, pay attention, we want some short-term success proper now. We want some short-term reduction. We are able to’t wait a 12 months or two down the street. Our farmers are going to undergo. Our communities are going to undergo.”
