Filmmaker Creates Black Heritage Trail In Albany

The Black Heritage Path can be positioned in Albany, Georgia.

Clennon L. King, the proprietor of AugustineMonica Movies, is spearheading the creation of a Black Heritage Path in Albany, Georgia, WALB reported.

The filmmaker goals to focus on the deep cultural roots of the town’s Black neighborhood. King, a filmmaker, believes that the numerous Black historical past in Albany is usually neglected and desires to showcase the wealthy heritage that has formed the town.

“Albany is not only any metropolis. It’s the blackest main metropolis within the state. It’s blacker than Atlanta, Columbus, Augusta, Macon, and Athens. And so, there’s a query of how we turned so Black. It’s a query of how we received right here. That’s what we purpose to have a look at,” King stated.

Working alongside the Dougherty County Board of Commissioners, King is planning an expansive strolling tour that can embody 20 stops, every providing a glimpse into the realm’s previous. The venture will characteristic historic landmarks, regional Black paintings, and images. The expertise affords contributors an opportunity to immerse themselves within the metropolis’s tradition and historical past.

“We’re going to have a look at slavery, emancipation, reconstruction, and Jim Crow. We’re going to have a look at all of it to assist us establish what our fuller, extra genuine narrative is,” King added, underscoring the significance of inspecting the complete spectrum of Albany’s historical past to know its Black heritage.

Gloria Gaines, a Dougherty County Commissioner, strongly believes that historical past could be a priceless financial asset. She sees the Black Heritage Path as a chance to draw guests and promote Albany as a vacation spot for these fascinated about historical past.

“There are historical past buffs who spend cash. We consider that this venture has an financial nexus. We consider this venture will carry folks to this neighborhood to spend cash,” Gaines stated.

Albany just isn’t alone in its efforts to revive and promote historic areas. Related initiatives throughout Georgia purpose to show historical past into an financial and cultural asset for native communities.

In December 2024, the Candy Auburn Grand Initiative introduced plans to revive 229 Auburn Avenue. The constructing is a historic landmark that housed the primary Black-owned financial institution, Atlanta State Financial savings Financial institution.

Equally, the initiative want to protect the whole block. A number of Black establishments have occupied the neighborhood, together with Morris Brown School, WERD Atlanta, and Bethel AME church.
